I wanted to see what you guys think of Sid (my cockerel), He hasn't been through a molt yet just so you know.He is about 10 months old.

Recently his feathers have been growing.

Thanks, I was reading some comments on what to look for when buying sumatras and fmp said go for birds with a higher tail carriage because once they have gone through a molt there tails will start to droop to a more horizontal level.

but thanks any way

oh sorry I had no idea

I thought you where going by the American standard.

Quote: that is true when they are molting. but they had left out one little thing that you should especially look for a higher tales in the cockerels because once they do grow in their Adult tales they become horizontal. all my males start out with high angles but once they grow up their tales get horizontal. Did you guys know that when a sumatra gets older it tail get shorter. I don't know if that is true for all of you. but mine do I have several hen out there that are 11 years old and they have the shortest tails out of all my sumatras they use to have a long tails but it got shorter as they aged.

We cant give you good input on your bird, since we don't know what your standard is. You should look your standard up and see how he comes to it. If you want you can share the standard that Ireland goes by and than we can help you out with it. (plus I would like to know just for knowing

My birthday is coming up in July and I'm getting British poultry standards 6th edition, it has pretty much every standard of all breeds in it. And since sids parents are from a English strain ill be breeding to the English standard. When I get the book I will post the British standard anyway.

How high do you think his tale should be?
The best thing about Sid is he has a good leg length, and he is getting better with the hens, originally when the hens layed their eggs he wouldn't sit with them but he has started doing that now.

I always suggest a roosters tail should be about 15 degrees when he is young, then when his tail comes in, it weighs it down to about horizontal.
