Hey, chics!
More new chickens?
The new addiction.
We have 4 new chicks that our ee hatched out for us on Father's day. Did your leghorn go broody again?

Hi Cindi! No, this time my Ameraucana, her OE half-sister, and my other OE have all been broody!! But due to a mix up in shipping eggs to put under the Am and first OE, I had to get an incubator because I couldn't wait to put all the eggs I ordered under them at once without the first batch sitting too long. And of course, chicken math tells me that I can't run an incubator with just 8 eggs in it, so I bought this batch with the 'Sumatra' from a couple in Riverview. I don't think I'll get eggs from them again.

I am trying to figure out if one of my birds is sumatra (or part sumatra most likely). It came from a hatching project and I have no idea with this one. It's pretty flighty but the feathers are all still rounded and it has a pea comb. It also makes the oddest sounds out of the bunch. The others that hatched with it look like a red sex link and a cuckoo marans but this all black one is stumping me.

I'll try to get a new one tomorrow. Good news though, whatever it is, it squatted for Max today. Eggs should be soon!

Great to see a posting specifically about Sumatra chickens.
Here is a couple of stories for you:
#1: My husband and I were in the office on the computers last week and our daughter came in through the kitchen screaming loudly sounding very upset. Hubby ran to her and found that she was just attacked by one of the Black Sumatra cockerels. She had him in the house that morning talking to him and petting him and he was fine. She reached in the coop that evening (he is in a room inside the garage area) and picked him up. He pinched her arm so hard that he drew blood and left a bruise on her arm with his beak and she just dropped him onto the top of the cage which was probably a foot or less. He began chasing her as she ran to the back door. When my hubby found him he was between the screen and the kitchen door. He was going to come into the house to get her. I had to get him a glove to pick him up to get him back in his coop. He was made. Our daughter was awfully upset and did not care what his fate would be (she loves all her chickens). Well the very next day he became chicken and Dumplings. A bit tough but tasty.
We have 3 other Black Sumatra cockerels so we did not have to think much on serving him up.
The 2 older ones are not showing signs of aggression and the younger one is too young. We had another one that we gave away that was showing the same aggressiveness. I hope he isn't aggressive towards that family.
Hubby's dad told us tonight that he got attacked pretty bad by his Black Sumatra cockerel that we gave him a few weeks back.
#2: We hatched too many chicks this year and were running out of space to put them as they were growing too fast. Decided to move a Black Sumatra pullet into a coop in the barn with Silver Spangled Hamburgs. Really did not think anything about it. It was a really hot day in the 90's. That crazy pullet attacked our cockerel (same incubation hatching as her). She fought him until he had either a heart attack or heat stroke. The action in the coop caused a Hamburg pullet to die that night. By the time I realized just how bad it was, it was too late. The pullet and cockerel were both in the corner with heads down pointed in the corner and body on ground. The cockerel lived a couple of days but would not raise his head. Tried electrolytes and moved him out of that coop. He was the only Silver Spangled Hamburg cockerel we had. He was our show cockerel. Well, we sent her to hubby's dads. He says she is very aggressive.

I sure hope our other Sumatra do not have these kinds of traits.

same here stonykill,

I've had them for yes and have never even had one look wrong at a person?? Actually of all the 400-500 chickens I have, the sumatras are THE ONLY ONES that have not at least tried me before. well them and the crevecoeurs
