Sumatra Thread!

Pics
My 10 week old 2/3 sumatra 1/3 gamefowl look more sumatra than my pure sumatra lol. Gypsy faces, practically non existant combs and wattles. I will try to get some pics.

No, but gamebirdsonly here on BYC has them, or at least Duns.

There's a seller on EBAY that auctions pure Khakis all the time. When I'm hatching again this fall I plan on bidding on those eggs.

Sad note, I lost my Black Sumatra chick. It just disappeared. It was being raised by a broody and they free range throughout the day when I'm not home so I'm unsure what might have happened to it. Now I only have the one Platinum Sumatra chick.

Thanks very much! You know, I just set 7 eggs from the guy on Ebay. Sadly, after he got his feedback, he hasn't answered my emails -- a just a question about genetics we had started before the auction ended. Out of the 7, I think only 2 are viable...I'm praying they are. From FL to WA is a long way and the PO must be praying for the lockout to end because the air sacs on most of the eggs were all over the place. Someone must have punted the box. Also, within 24 hours of setting the eggs, two began to weep. Old eggs?

I'll try to find Gamebirdsonly.

I'm really sorry to hear about your Black chick!! How old was it?

I spent a LOT of money last year on the ebay eggs, not one ever hatched and at $40(I think) a batch .... I think I got at least 4 batches from him...some grew but none ever hatched

I have 4 in the hatcher right now from gamebirdsonly...and I have one black one that hatched last week(I think that one is from Aubrey). Some routes seem to be more harsh on eggs than others....I can get some from one region and get a good hatch and then get multiples from another region and get bad results

starting to think this breed is delicate for shipping hatching eggs

. Chicks will be the next step

what's funny is I can get a breed that I only want a few of and have 20 of 21 eggs hatch and then get 2 dozen of something I really want and have none hatch

I really wish I had someone close by that had some nice sumatra

I think distance plays a major roll. I only have blacks and blues so far. I thought I was going to have a splash. Looked like one until it was about 4 weeks old. Then feathered out into a blue

Of course most of my girls are broody right now, so 6 to 8 eggs is all I have been able to sell at a time for hatching. I only will collect for 2 days, and they MUST BE CLEAN or I eat them. I'm picky about what I hatch, or sell to hatch. Unfortunately, many aren't.

I agree , just depend on the individual postal hubs they go threw. Honestly that's it, distance has nothing to do with it. I've imported before and hatched them. Honestly I get better reports back from my west coast buyers, than ones in the south east a lot of the times. why? They go 150 miles north of me, jump on a plane and are there in the morning the following day. Ones that have to go threw multiple hubs, get handled by different people in each one, etc, they just run a great risk of being grabbed up by one in an ill mood.

Some hubs x-ray every box that comes threw them, some dont
some have climate controlled everything, some dont
SOME READ THE LABLES...some dont
some read they and abuse them because of it

basically, it just depends on who handles them between point A and B

Often time, long distance shipping like I mentioned, cuts all that out.
In my case, South East states are all by truck, they are liable to make 20 stops from here to there at different sorting hubs

So dont let distance be the deciding factor... they are just as likely to hatch from 3000 miles away as they are 30.
Now the rotten eggs on arrival thing, that's just a poor seller.

Thanks, BBB. I did candle. They didn't look old, if anything they looked infertile. No smell. But no doubt not of the eggs they claim they pull 2-3 times a day. Maybe from 2 weeks ago! Your project sounds like it's going well. Too bad I'm a fan of LF size.

KFL73 -- think we're talking about the same person. The only one who sells Khaki & Dun eggs on Ebay. Dang it! Not finding anyone else who sells eggs.

I used to be a purist -- Sumatra's need to be BLACK! Have a pair of lovely blacks. But I ended up with a Splash who looks like a Lavender and it got me thinking that it might be fun to breed her to a Khaki. Sigh...

Trying to stay hopeful, yet realistic about these eggs. Thanks for everyone's feedback and very interesting to know about the shipping routes. What if we start marking the boxes as "Live Reptile".

Or put in one of those little fake chirping eggs.

Was the splash from Blk X Blk breeding? if so the birds either are dark blue or the splash is not a real splash.
