Sumatra Thread!

My LF Blue Pullet 6 months old.
400

She's got some nice lacing, can't comment on the weight as I haven't weighed my youngsters, just my adults. Need to remember to catch them tonight to try and put into a pen, I'll try to remember to weigh them than, but my oldest youngsters are only 4 to 5 months old.

Thank you! And I'd greatly appreciate the comparison. She just seems so small to me even next to the other sumatra pullet her age.

We need Sumatras!!!!!! I love my Buckeyes and am slowly buildiing up my breeding line - I really like to build up some SOP quality endangered breeds. My granddaughter showed and won with my Buckeyes last week and now the breeding bug has bitten her and she wants MORE! Kinda like potato chips, huh? Love chicken math! Anyhow, I either would like to buy some eggs to hatch or a trio of young Sumatras. Anybody with more information about where I can find a good start for her, so she can work on them for next year's shows, I would really really appreciate it! I have space for them and love my chickens dearly, so they will be going to a good home in NW Ohio! Thanks in advance for any information any of you have! I could drive to meet someone in the tri-state area if you don't want to ship.

I would recommend going to the Ohio Nationals and looking at the sumatras there. Talk to the breeders and see if you can get some eggs or birds there. This way you can see what the breeders birds look like in person, because pictures only show just so much. They can probably help you out a lot with who has good birds and other information.

Sure you can look at it that way.But I not going to cheat her of her money. If she is really interested in some good birds them I am going to breed some of my nicer birds. sure I have never shown at ohio before. but I bet you if I did they would do really well and let me tell you why .For one thing I have a friend who is a APA licesnced judge who has won the ohio national poultry show three times with his bantam black sumatra hen and would you like to know the reason why that hen kept on winning? well let me say that non of the sumatras in the hole show had the head quite like he did on his sumatra bantam. He breeds for a bigger head on his sumatras if you look at a head that is small it looks narrow and the beck looks long. Now if you have a bigger head it looks more round and the beck looks more short. I do breed for bigger heads it is not against the standard at all (until you stop breeding for the roundness of the head) it actually looks more like the description in Standard Of Perfection.

I agree with Ramirez.......you are there in Ohio where that big show is held and you should be
able to make contact with some breeders of good quality sumtras in your state
and they may even be able to help you with tips on what to look for in showing them.
Some breeders may even help out a junior wanting to show by getting them some
good starter breeding stock. Go to the show and look, talk and enjoy.
Good luck.

Believe it or not - I have never been to the Ohio Nationals. I told my husband I would like to go - I wonder if I should take my granddaughter so she can get a good taste of how a big show is handled. .... Do you have to register to go watch or just show up when you want to see everything and do you go before, during or after the judging or is the judging going on all the time?! I am really green when it comes to showing! Ask me to raise, breed, hatch, and care for chickens, but going to watch a big show kind of overwhelms me!
