Sumatra Thread!

I don't know, as I have never been myself. But I found their website last night, I just put in Ohio National poultry show and found it. Had some pictures and information on it. It's the second weekend of November and is 3 days long. I would recommend going and taking the granddaughter with you. It won't hurt to look and see how its done there, it would just help out. Good luck

If you could get eggs or birds there, it would save on shipping stress.

Is it better to go for both days? It is close to a 4 hour drive for us - we live in the very NW corner of Ohio and we weren't sure if we should stay overnight. I will have my granddaughter, another member of her 4-H club who shows poultry, his mother who is the 4-H adviser and my husband and possibly my daughter. Are there ever any birds for sale at the show?

If it were me, I would probably do over night so you have plenty of time to talk with people and see everything without rushing things. It sounds and looks pretty big from the pictures I seen.

I agree with the big show right there in your backyard you should be able to find some really nice birds, and getting to see all of the birds, I would be drooling over so many breeds, but I admitt I am a chickenaholic . I would go in a heartbeat! Hope you have a great time!!

Anyone going to the "international" poultry show in southern wi on 09/28-09/29? It's our first poultry show as observers only and we would really like to meet some of the people showing sumatras.

Thanks, I would crate train, but not overdue it,  Get them comfortable with it, Once we bathe though we don't handle them, they are in a larger cage for about 5 days before the show and we only feed and water.  Then at the show, we only handle to put them into cages and feed and water, at home they are more flighty and crazy when they are loose in their pens or out in the pastured area and act more wild, once caged they get nervous, but don't scream and they pace in the cage but don't fly up and around acting crazy, just takes time to see what works best for you and your birds, I like it when they get nervous and display as you walk up, but not overly crazy, like outside where they scream and try and fly.

Ok we will try that. There is a little one day 4H show in Nov that we would like to take the happy couple to just to see what a judge thinks of them. And it's all in one day so I don't have worry about leaving them for several days and getting too stressed. Thanks for the advice i realy was uncertain about taking him as he is still so untame.
Alexis whole club is excited to see the rooster she has talked so much about!
His feathering looks amazing! The two or three long ones look so tattered. The ones he came here with did fall out and those were the replacements, I hope they fall out and grow back by Nov! Or should I pull them a month before the show so new ones will be in?
I only have some 5-6 mo old chicks molting now, none of my adults are molting.
And I'm so excited, the sumatra hen has laid two eggs in two days!!! She quit laying past two months. But she is laying in my horses stall on the ground. The fist day she made a little hay nest and luckily my mare is not a pig so she left it alone. Then yesterday she laid on the bare mat, she tried nesting and all she did was scrape away all the shavings and the egg was cracked from hitting the bare floor. So today the Sumatras are staying in the coop until I find an egg in the nesting box.

I'm not going, but I do hope you have fun and meet some great people there, as well as see some nice birds.
