Sumatra Thread!

Is this head considered too blocky? I for one like the head shape overall but it does not fit a Sumatra.

You know I am still not seeing a good connection. I don't think it has to do with the size of the head. I think your birds may have really fine bones. How you can tell is if you get a leg band, (in all the chicken books I have read a sumatras hen should fit into a 9 size, males should range from 9 to11 size) if your females fit into a size 11 them they have way to big of bones, but if the leg band is really big on them then their bones are to fine and need to get larger. same goes with the males. My flock of hens fit well into a 9 size leg band. most of my males fit into &nbsp9size but I do have one that fits into a 11 size.

Champion, I don't think the bone on this black hen can get much thicker. Look at her legs.

Something about this picture just makes me smile for some odd reason. I like the shine to her eye. To me, it looks a bit thick but if she had her tail up (like excited), I think she would look great, it all fits

To me her head looks to fit her neck but maybe the eye is slightly on
the small side but only slightly? For some reason the comb is distracting
to me and keeps drawing my eyes to there......odd. The angle of the
picture makes it hard to see the width of her head. I wouldn't want the
beak any longer. JMHO

I was just guessing. It is hard to judge a bird in a pic. The angles get weird sometimes.
maybe if you had a different photo of her I could tell.

Yes, this does clear that up as a misunderstanding on my part of what you were saying. Thank you for taking the time to point out my misunderstanding of what you meant. Do you possibly have any pictures of what you would consider an ideal head size that you would care to share? Thank you for sharing your opinion.

I don't have any Sumatra pictures but if you have a Standard the illustrations there should help you. If you don't have a Standard you need to get one. You can't breed chickens without one. You can reproduce chickens without a Standard but you can't breed them.
