Sumatra Thread!

My smallest flight is 8ft high, 20ft long by 5ft wide making 100sq ft of floor space and it is too small for keeping pheasants in. I'll be expanding the pen 10ft wider so it'll be 300sq ft for a trio of pheasants. If the ceiling is too low the birds hit it if they fly up alarmed and injure themselves, sometimes even breaking their own neck so I would suggest a minimum hight of 8 feet, then you can keep doves as well if you decide to later.

That is a nice sized pen to begin with and making it larger is a good idea for pheasants.
We try to keep our pens for the chickens at least tall enough to walk in so we don't have
to duck down. We have breeding groups of 5-8 birds for some breeds but for smaller
groups we use smaller runs but still tall enough to walk in. It's rather hard to catch birds
in low pens.

Every one who is a new bee to showing or wants to show a sumatra, This rooster in this photo has a well connected tail. See how he has no ruffles at the top of the tail and has a nice smooth transition from the back to the tail. That is want you want to breed for as in the tail part of it.

Dsfrango I recommend coming down to the Sussex County Poultry Fanciers Show in May in New Jersey or and even longer trip to the Delmarva show in April. They are both great large shows and my self along with Tom K will be showing our LF and Bantams Sumatras. If you have never talked to Tom then it would be great to meet him. His knowledge is amazing and so are his birds!

Quote: Who will you be getting them from?
Quote: Yes good idea. Tom's birds really have some good quality to them. His birds have some of the best tails I have seen on a sumatra. The color of his birds are spot on too.

Here's a couple more pics of my new rooster

And the new hen. Not the best angle to see any features but she is pretty nice
Would love to see a picture of your new hen once she regrows her tail. I have a grow out that looks good so far, but she is missing the top feathers out of her tail so she looks like she has a split tail, and its driving me nuts. Good luck with them.

All of my birds either are from Tom or chicks from the birds I got from him. His stock is really nice and he is big into helping future fanciers such as 4Hers and FFA or any juniors that shows or has an interest in poultry.
