Sumatra Thread!

Champion-I'm just going to mix them in with my birds.

Coop Scoot- I now have 3 Roos and 6 hens. All are black except the 1 new blue roo addition....

Zack-I am really enjoying showing and meeting other poultry fanciers especially with interests in the same breeds as me!:) ill check to see how far of a drive that would be for me. If it's in jersey it may be about 3-4hrs for me. I may just be willing to do that! That would be great to meet you guys too!

Quote: I would be careful breeding to much blue with your blacks. If you breed it to much of that breeding it will lead to the black color turning dull over time as well as the green sheen being barred with purple. The lighter the rooster the faster that will happen. I bred a dark blue rooster with a black hen. I could see a slight difference in the under color in one generation, he was such a dark rooster that he had a green sheen to him.

I agree with champ. U may want to buy a blue hen from him or another breeder or possibly a splash hen. Splash are the best because u can cross them with blacks and get 100% blue and if u cross a splash with a blue u will get 25% black 25% splash and 50% blue!

Thank you for the info, I didn't know that. Now I'm second thinking adding him in:( I'd like to work on the blacks primarily so maybe I shouldn't introduce the blue.... I have 2 other breeds I'm working with so I don't have space to divide up another color. Darn. The guy also had some amazing black Roos that I missed the opportunity to get then:(

Maybe he will be willing to swap a black rooster for the blue rooster.
