Sumatra Thread!

Thanks I will. This is my first year with blue bantams. I have two breeding pens set up, my trio of blues and all my bantam splash hens over my best black male. I am really happy with some of the results. Espeacily this one. I have not really had any chicks with this much lacing at a young age so I can't wait for them to grow.[/quote

I agree with ramirezframing on the blue. Lots of potential with that blue. I hope the lacing stays for ya. I didn't have much luck with my blue spring chicks, all of the ones with beautiful lacing lost it in their backs, as they lightened way too much while growing in their adult feathers. Depressing really :(

oh and championsumatra, you should do an update photo as well, because as you know the blues change so much in coloring as they grow. It will be interesting to see the results.

Quote: Thanks for your response. I had some Blues that looked promising last year and of corse their lacing faded away too, so I totally get what you are feeling. Hopefully this year they will not do that. I am trying to get some good stock out this year because I am planning on going to the sumatra national at the Dixie classic show in December. (Anyone know of the details about that show?) I did not breed any splash this time just blue on blue and black on blue.

Hi ya'all!

I'm hoping all you chicken experts can give a hand to a chickie newbie! Attached are photos of my two new Sumatra kids (THANK YOU AUBREY). Can you tell me gender and what exactly their colors are called? I've also attached a phoenix photo (sorry wrong thread) but I have no idea on what color it is other than gorgeous.

Also, I read some previous posts of people working on different colors in Sumatras. Anyone have any pics I could see? I'm really contemplating working on some and if there is stock out there to start from please let me know.

One last thing, living in the far frozen north...I'm designing a new coop to include breeding pens. My issue is with extra roosters. My plan would be to have a bachelor pad, 8 x10 indoors, and then allow them all to free range during the day. My hens are all kept behind a 2 acre fence. The roosters would be able to see them but not get to them. Would new roosters integrate with old? Staking them really isn't an option up here in the winter. Thanks for any advice you can depart. And thank you Aubrey (for the dun and Toni-Marie for the black) Kids!

Looks like a dun pullet
Looks like a khaki pullet, how old are these birds?
As for a bachelor pad, I haven't had much luck with one. I always had a main rooster in the group that would take to whooping butt no matter what. It didn't matter if I took that main rooster out, a new one would take his place, which is natural. Others might have had some luck with a bachelor pen, I don't think I had enough room as I couldn't free range mine at all. I have had great success in getting an older rooster to take in a new rooster. I just try to add the new rooster as a youngster, and watch them carefully. If they do more then just the rank setting fighting, I'll remove one of them.
Good luck with them.

I got the call!

Sand Hill Preservation called yesterday thar they had shipped my orpingtons and Sumatras for arrival most likely Thursday. Can't wait!!! Even better - they there in 3 extra Sumatras because they wanted to use a bigger shipping box due to heat.

Hi how are all of you?

i don't know if i said about me getting some new birds, any way my new birds arrived i got 3 large Sumatra hens and 2 pekin cockerels and a pair of carlisle's. I'm pleased with all of the birds i got but i am very disappointed because the carlisle hen died on the way and she was a nice hen. But none the less the carlisle cockerel is a beautiful bird.

How are all of you getting on with predators?
My gran only has 1 hen and 1 chick left because the fox has been giving her grief. My dad went lamping on Sunday night and he shot 4 foxes, and then he went out on Tuesday and he got 3 more foxes and my gran still has one who is trying to get her birds. I've been lucky so far and i haven't had any problem with and predators!

Heres some pics of the carlsile, he is my pride and joy!
