Sumatra Thread!

he won class champion in the open show

and here are some photos of this years batch I know they have light faces but I am working on it.

This rooster has what I refer to as the 'domestic look' based on his feathering. We had some blues with great type and everything but the feathers were too soft and the roosters always had the wrinkled look in their tails. It took probably 6-8 generations of breeding to get rid of it once it was introduced and we still have it pop up from time to time in the blacks that were related to the blue rooster that had it. It seems like whenever someone introduced blue, they used a large framed bird that is what caused this. Too many people think bigger is better so we end up with these large birds that aren't very Sumatra like.

Sorry for the rant, I saw the pic and it is the perfect example of what I have been trying to describe to up and coming sumatra breeders about feather type and what to breed away from

yes I can see what you mean. the judge did tell me to be aware of it with one of my hens.but he was not refering to my the rooster above he sayed he liked the feathering on him he may look really like he has more of the soft feathing but if you feel him. it is really rough feathering it is also what I feed them. I give then the purina terkey flock rasier with otes and some calf mana and a heand full of scrach and sun flower seeds. I also give them the red cell.

oh I found some pics of the show that I was just at. this was in the junior show. the guy in the white is the judge. he was judging the top winners. the blue hen is mine. judge he told us what he liked about the our birds and what he did not like about our birds. he did say he would like the color of the legs a little bit lighter. and he also said that her eyes could be darker. and he also said she has to narrow of a head and that is why she did not win overall champion of the junior show. but she did win champion large fowl. and I am glad those kids won. they had the better birds. this photo is not all of the show but there was a lot of birds. this is my sumatra .
Donald knows his stuff. Being here in California with AOSB classes of not less than 30 at the small shows( up to 150+). Plus he breeds long tails, and knows quite a bit about feathering and orientals overall.

I knew he was a good judge just by the way he was judging the poultry and what he was telling us. There are always going to be good judges and bad judges but even the bad judges have good points, you just need to know what you are doing to guide yourself to make sure you do not mess up the quality that you have already accomplish.
thanks for clearing that up.

I like the rooster's body type and leg color but his tale angle is to high, he has a super red face which you can change it with some sun. it will make his face darker. a very small head for my likeing. I do like the sumatras to have longer saddle feathers and tales. now the hen it is hard to tell in this photo to really see her confiormation. but I do like the head on her. do you have any more photos of them?? I might be missing something little that I can not see in this photo??

Heres my Sumatra called Sid i bred him this year and without being cocky (pardon the pun) i think he is not far of perfect he 5 months and 26 days.

Funny thought one of these chicks i don't know which one but one is the handsome one above (Sid).

European sumatars have a different standard than we have. Alot of their's have much higher tail angle that I have seen. Actually there are 3 forms seen over there that totally look different from each other. Just depends on whicg contry the hail from. The German sumatras have almost a leghorn angle to them, just pulled down a bit from weight of the feathering. So they cant all be judged based on US standards...

Show him in competition & I think you'll find he's quite a way from perfect.
