Sumatra Thread!

Hello everyone,
Was wondering how well Sumatras do with other breeds? Was thinking of getting some to add to my flock of salmon faverolles and GLWs.
Thanks!
mine do great. i have some cockerals in with my columbian wyandottes and a LF hen with my bantam favs they get along great i have had silkies with my sumatras.

Sumatra's do well with any other breed. Even ducks. Sumatra' roo's are pretty mellow guys for the most part. The hens , at least mine hang uot with RIR's and Runner and Pekin ducks.

I am putting my sumatras eggs in the incubator today. I have 4 dozen eggs in it. I will update you guys on how the hatch goes. and the crazy thing is I am hatching even more eggs!!
HOLY COW!!!! (chicken rather!)
so how many total do you have set? i have 3dz mixed yard eggs set for the day before easter! dont have a good sumatra roo to breed with yet... hopefuly one of the 3 chicks i hatched that have survived will be a roo! but im hoping for a blue and black roo so i can put a blue over a black and a black over a blue!

I know it is crazy but it seems like I can never Hatch out eggs At all. I once hatched out a Four dozen eggs And only five hatched!
I do ok but my broody's are much better at it. Plus I don't need to brood them. This year I'm just going to let the hens handle all of the hatching. Much easier on me.And better for the chicks

i cant wait till my girls finally do their motherly duties so i can stop usin this evil bator!!! lol i will still use it for my layers tho! i still want more of your wild line stony! i may be hittin you up again later on in the year! maybe oct or nov... champ... i may hit you (or anyone else for that matter) up sooner than that if you sell eggs or chicks... heck even some juvies would be nice! lol
oh and my lil sumatra mutt died this mornin... smothered i think? about to put them all out in a week or so to finish out....

the only reason I do not use broody hens is that the chicks are not as friendly as they are when you hand raise them. I had a broody hen that would peck my hand every time I would go near her and soon after the chick started to do it to.when the chick grew up she still would peck my hand. it was so bad that when I showed her. she had peaked the hand of the judge. and he DQ her. I knew she was going to peck him. but I did not know at the time that she would be DQ from pecking him.

Well i can see the point of incubating if you are in the show circuit.... but i dont like showin off my animals... there are way too many ppl that are snobby about little things and well it just werks my nerves!!! and when that happens im a bull in a china shop... dont like seein red much so i choose to stay away from things like that...besides... my chickens are my therapy! why would i turn that against me? lol wat were we talkin about again?!?!?
oh yea broody vs batin....
yes i like being able to handle my birds but the time it takes to do all the work that a broody does 150x better than i could ever do is so much more easier! lol being pecked is minor in my books... but maybe if you take the chick away at 6-10wks and train them to be gentle and not to peck... it will take time but that seems to be so much more worth it than doin all that bator math! lol which i sometimes suck at!
