Sumatra Thread!

Hi, new here but thought I'd ask a question on a sumatra rooster that I have running around my yard. He's a few years old and came from a hatchery. My question is what color is he? I would guess a splash but he is mainly black and has white and a little bit of red in him.

hopfully shows the red in his neck

his whole body

his wing

his tail or whats left of it

his 3 spurs, he keeps breaking the top ones

Thanks for any help, now I just have to finish reading through the thread

Cute birds championsumatra

i was reading that they are know for loving high up roosts and being able to jump 6 ft even with clipped wings.

he looks like a mix breed. his tail is to short to be a pure bred sumatra.
His tail is normally longer but he is molting as most chickens do. I keep finding his feathers on the ground everywhere (for the past two weeks and it's been mostly tail feathers) and he is the only chicken that is lose in my yard.

He's a poorly colored black Sumatra. Could you post a full side view picture of him? Get down to his level and take a picture.

Welcome to BYC Danieljr!!!!

I have gotten some from Privett Hatchery, in New Mexico.
Champsumatra is from New Mexico & she says there are a lot
Sumatra breeders in that neck of the woods. Could be they
actually have pretty good bloodlines.

The ones I have gotten from them have a good body type, tails,
dark skin, and nice lacing on the blues.

Is pretty hot right now to ship a long way,
so it might depend where you are at as to whether
you should find something closer to you.
Somebody on this thread should be
able to help you find some that are closer to you.
