Sumatra Thread!

Quote: I was not breeding them at the time. They where molting so no problems with getting a mix. I was letting them out for a while to give them some fresh air and to get some sun. They Really needed to get out of those small coops... I only have two coops one is for my moms laying chickens and the other one is for my sumatra's. my moms laying chickens are free range all day.. so it's not like I could get them all in... as long as I keep an eye on them they are fine.

I am sorry you misread this but I did quote someone else's post and was not
talking about you or your breeding practices. Many people will free range different
breeds together and there is nothing wrong with it as long as they are not selling
hatching eggs from birds that are free ranged with other breeds as being purebred.
In the fall after I no longer sell hatching eggs I will free range some breeds together
but I am careful as to what breeds with whom as some are more territorial than
others...........but I do NOT sell hatching eggs as pure unless the breeds have been
penned separately for more than 30 days. I want my customers to be assured
they are getting pure birds and good quality. I have had molting birds still breeding
and producing eggs so for me a molt does not guarantee that the roosters are
not breeding the hens. Hope you understand it was not about you.......again.

I got a ameraucana cockerel from my Dad, and he is so strong. He crippled my dads wyandotte, and he tore the wattle of my brothers Brahma. I hate the out come of the fights, i learnt the hard way that electric chicken wire doesn't work. The cockerels kept getting out and fighting, so as my Dad recommended i'll make some pheasant pens.

How are all your birds?

And i i'll use the egg shells as apposed to oyster shell. Thanks for sharing that handy tip.

I agree.......the attitude of the bird does factor in a fair deal. I have also
learned to keep my breeds separate......helps with keeping the eggs
pure and keeps down the fighting among the roos.
Yup, I agree. That rooster taught me how to make pens so that birds don't slip over, under, or any other way. Amazing how small a spot can be for a determined bird to get through.

Raph, I use the egg shells with the oyster shell. I give the oyster shell as free choice and the egg shell when the pail is full, so I have enough for all the bird pens at one time. Good luck

Beginning to think we are going to have a long winter, all my birds seem to be going into molt early. It usually seems they are losing feathers at the fairs and maybe a week or so before, but its still a month away and they are losing feathers already :( Anyone else seem to be having early molts? or is it the usually time for you? or have they not yet started?

Most of ours are molting as well. It does seem early this year.
The hens have slowed on the eggs as well and that is early too.
