Sumatra Thread!

I am so happy I am doing an internship with a sumatra breeder!!! I am learning so much.

You have many nice birds! It looks like you take great care of them and care about them a lot. I am proud of you for that. I hope my daughter does as well as you have!

Infinity-he is maturing beautifully! Very good rooster but very shy about us and keeps his distance. It is so hard to photograph him! But I'm used to roosters that terrorize the kids so I am happy with his shy demeanor! And is such a gentle breeder to the hens, even the BT in the flock. He had a molt earlier in summer but it didn't seem to be a full molt. His tail feathers didn't all fall out and those old ones are so tattered. We can't wait to see a full tail on him. His back is broad and tail set low.

I think he'll come around as he learns more about you guys, I can't believe his sickles are so long, thought they would of fallen out by now, all my males are in molt except the young ones so we are here at our local fair with only a couple of hens, probably as the days shorten he'll begin to molt, I think the Sumatras are great gentlemen, never had one that terrorized the hens, or be agressive towards us, which has been nice. I have had some bad roosters before, we had some WFB Spanish before that I used to call velociratoptors, the would stalk in packs and come after you, not just one but both of them.. there gone now LOL.

Here at the show, this is why I don' like my sumatras to be to tame, first pic is how she looks all calm and second is how she looks when its time to judge. She will pace a little but not to crazy, just gets excited

That not always true. If you coop trian your birds well then they can be as tame as dogs and still show well. My birds are super tame and I have coop trained them. they show better than the a lot of other birds in the show to be honest.

Just curious, anyone else notice their broody sumatra hens cover up the nest with bedding/feathers when they get up to eat? I noticed one of the broody hens does this every time, just like a pheasant. I have never seen any other chicken do this before...

Not my sumatras, but I have a silkie hen that will do it when she is on the nest. I have watched her a few times take hay and feathers and put them on her back and than hunker her head down.

My non-broody Arkansas Blues cover up their eggs every time they lay. I have to hunt through the straw very carefully to make sure I don't miss any.

I never noticed my Sumatra doing it.
