Sumatra Thread!

Zach, good to hear you did good. Bird looks great.

As for the other birds posted for discussion , I too prefer the head of the blue male. I prefer a head that flows smoothly into the hackle / neck . Not a big honking ball. To me, when looked at from any direction , there should just be a nice smooth transition downward into the flow of the neck. I also prefer 0 wattles, and a pea comb that it virtually nothing. Not like the Nat Geo pic, though that is a Pea as well. I just like the sleek look the flowing head and lack of skin protrusions gives them. But again that's me, I breed form what I like! Lol what somebody wrote in a book in the 1800's doesn't really matter to me haha!!

Same here I am not easy on my birds either.
You know I like the blue male better than the other birds you posted. The blue male has smaller wattles and comb than the other ones do. He almost looks like he is going to have a better body type than the other birds do (I can't say that for sure). Great color for a blue, but to me he needs stronger lacing, nice face color and eye color. he dose need a better head, but he is young so there is time for improvement. Is his tail still growing in or is that is long as the tail is going to get on him?
His tail is still growing in that picture, thanks for your input.

Here is a hen approximately 15 months old, I really like her, but I would prefer her beak to be just a tad shorter.

I like her type ok-wish her lacing was a bit stronger. Agree about the beak & I think her head is a little on the fine side. Looks to have good feather quality. Carries her wing too low.

You know Foggy bottom bantams all the sumatra roosters that troyer had put up had small heads at Least to me. the blue Rooster had the best connected head out of all of them.I will have to post some pics of my largest headed sumatras so you can see. Oh and I would love to hear every ones input on them. If you guys don't mind.

Can you explain what you mean by the head a little on the fine side please
so I know I am seeing the same as what you are pointing out. Are you talking
about the throat area or the top of the head and width? Is the transition from the
back of the head down into the neck smooth or is it just the turn of the head that
gives the hint of a dip? Thanks

I don't do the blue, just black and duns. I know that like dun, blues come in different shades. If the color is even, does the shade of "slate" blue matter (this would remove the dark blues that are almost black) ? So besides for her lacing, would her over all color be too light or ok? I do have to admit that she is the most even shade of blue I have seen. I don't see the black spots/ flecks in her feathers like alot of blue hens have that I have seen. Thanks for any help here.
