Sumatra Thread!

All my birds are miserable because the weather has been windy wet and cold. :( I was going to make a coop for transporting chicken to shows and sales, but I don't have enough wood plus I feel kind of tired so ill do that next week. I'll try sell some coops in future, I just need to sort my own ends out first :)

I also threw down some barley and wheat where my chicken are so that should grow through and be nice for the chicken in future.

With the whole breeding thing I want to try hatch some more sumatras out of what I have now and see what they come out like. Because so far I've done one hatch out of each of my two hens and the offspring have been of a low quality. And the only good hen I've bred got eaten. But I definitely know that the Sussex will be shipped over here at soon. So just for now because I could breed some decent Sussex, I'll focus on them.

How are all of your birds?
What's the weather like with you guys?

The birds are doing good. I'm not hatching any yet as
I am waiting until the weather will be consistently warmer.
We have had a quite the cold spell lately but thankfully there
has not been any snow or ice yet.

I hope you can get things going good for you soon. Have you
thought about contacting calendar/card companies to try to sell
some of your drawings for their products?

You'll have to put up some pictures of your show crates once you have them done. Do you know what style you are going to make? Good luck with your breeding, hopefully you can find some more sumatras to help you out. Hopefully you'll get alot of babies and be able to take some to show on your sussex. Weather isn't any better here, yesterday it didn't get above freezing. I'm waiting for alot of my project pullets to start laying along with my sumatras. One of my turkeys has started to lay, so I have to check for her eggs alot so they don't freeze on me. And I am waiting for my red goldens to start as I have seen my male showing off for the girls.

I could try the calendar companies, I just need to do some better more upto date drawings. But recently I haven't found any inspiration for the drawing, I'm enjoying the building right now.when I start one of my show crates I'll do a build along kinda thing with pictures for you guys. But I won't be doing any of that till next weekend.

ramirezframing what turkeys have you got?

You guys should get some pictures of your chicken and your coops and that sort of thing, i was thinking about getting some pics of our place and where and how the chicken are kept. And what other animals have you guys got?

I have a pure royal palm pen and a broad breasted cross pen for meat birds. Besides the chickens and turkeys, I have red golden pheasants, dogs, cats, fish, horses, a rabbit, and kids. :) What all do you have?

There's no magic age when a sumatra will start to lay. Each bird is different. I have one pullet who should have started laying before winter set in, but she hasn't. I have seen in alot of my birds, no matter the breed, where a pullet will hold off till spring to start laying. I have a project pullet that started laying a few weeks ago in the mist of the cold weather that my area is having, but her sisters have not started to lay. So to answer your question, the best I can say is that it's a good sign that she is checking the nest boxes out, but she will start when she starts. Welcome to the waiting game :) Good luck.
