Sumatra Thread!

Sumatras aren't exactly a rare breed, attend your local shows (note: actual shows, not fairs) and I bet you find at least one breeder with Sumatras better than you'd get from a hatchery (Sandhill is just another hatchery but with better marketing y'all. Seriously.)

Edit: or grab poultry press and start making phone calls to the guys that are winning with them.

well made points BGMatt......thanks.

The sun was out when I got home from work so I snapped a few pictures and this one turned out. This guy is really feeling the testosterone and almost attacked my legs a few times today but fortunately couldn't decide if he wanted to follow through and didn't. He is tame and has never kicked me before. I'm hoping for more sunny days so he can darken, lol, I guess we all are...

Since my area often tends to get into the high 90's and even a lot of triple digits and we have to contend with the brick wall of humidity, I had put all my pens in very shady areas, thus the birds don't tend to get alot of sun. I have noticed that the hens don't tend to lighten in the face, but all of the roosters will. Good luck with your boy and getting some warmer sunny days.

It is annoying when that one sumatra breeder at the show is you and you have no competition. Seems like when we show, we're the only people with them or the other sumatras are from our line. I'd love to see them as popular as the ameraucanas or even buckeyes.

Have Kevin and Don not been showing? I confess I haven't paid much attention to the Sumatras up here in this area beyond there being a few.

Quote: That is the situation at the shows I have been to. Either none are there or its from one person. At one show I was at there was only one hen and she looked like she came from a hatchery. The only other show that had sumatras had a few more and they were very nice. A friend has been trying to talk me into it for two years now, just as a friendly thing, but I have to admit it aint my thing. I think I'll leave it up to the kids and him.
