Sumatra Thread!

A very interesting idea and I'd like to know what you discover.
I don't have enough Sumatras to help you on this. I had a few
but replaced them with a quad of much better birds earlier this
year and I don't have many chicks yet from the quad. I admit I
am somewhat incubator challenged and I'm just about ready to
employ someone's broody silkies.

Thanks! I wish I could just give you some of my ladies. I can not get them to stop going broody for the life of me. A lot of them are on their 3rd batch this year, and I don't want to hatch right now. (no coops for birds because we are building our house on raw land, and they are all in temporary large wire dog kennels)

My line of chicks tend to come out with a nice amount of white in the chest and some on the wings. All the ones I have raised so far have had nothing but the nice beetle green sheen. I have not come across any purple and i have not had any Sumatra chicks black or blue that were almost sold in color a a chick. I do have to get a photo of my little blue bantam pullet her lacing is coming in great and I can't wait for her to mature.

You need to post that picture. You have us all waiting! That's great you have such nice beetle green feathers. I recently have run into the purple lustre color. Like for example the pullet in my profile picture was a almost all black chick with little white. She is like a 3D card now that with every turn you turn her, she changes color (you can kind of see that in the picture). ugh! She just started laying and I doubt I will use her. Its frustrating at times, but I really really do enjoy the challenges.

Ok here are some pictures. All the chicks from this line had the white tip only on there feather not solid white as you see in the picture. They black ones are purple and green as you can see. These birds have real wide feathers and have a real nice roundness at the tip of the feathers, so far the pea combs are looking straight. If anybody wants this line when they lay I be happy to get you some eggs. This is line, strain is called dixie line.

I have never heard of "Dixie Line". Can you explain what this line
is and where they come from, what lines to create them?

Do you know how tempting it is to make a road trip!!!!!! Your birds are fantastic!!!!

If you were closer I'd be more than happy to come help you build some coops
just so I could see the eye candy.

Looking good Raph. LOL I stared at faces like that all spring and summer so far (even had one going during the winter, got to love them silkies). Are all the chicks sumatra chicks?

I know how you feel. I have not successfully hatched a Sumatra egg yet this year . I've pulled vent fluff. They are pest free. They are outside on grass in a tractor. I honestly do not know what to do. I have 1 roo and 2 girls. All are 2 years old. There is only 1 Sumatra breeder I have been able to find within reasonable driving distance. I'd love to be able to bring in a second line, but it looks like they have to wait til I win the lottery

Sorry about it not working out for you on the hatching egg front. Hope you can get more before you win the lottery.
