Sumatra Thread!

Sounds interesting, I would love to know what you find out. I will also try to keep track here as to what I see, since I have seen chicks that are nearly half white in fuzz and some almost solid black fuzz. All of mine have had/ or get the white flights though as they feather in.
Oh that would be perfect! Thank you.

The couple other lines I have did have one white feather on them even the black and blue line. Some had two white feathers and a little on the tip of the wing feather. I thought the white feather on the wing was a bad thing thanks for letting me know. I will take some pictures for you and PM them to you and you can give me your opinion on what you think. Well I can tell you that these chicks that are solid feathers are from the father in the picture that has alot of green to him. The ones I have with a white wing feather or two have more purple on them then green. I hope this helps you. When they hatched they had alot of dark color down to there feet on there legs as the other lines were yellow then darkened in a few days.
Thank You Kindly

Yes I do believe different lines will show slight variations from chicks to adults. It is the reason I started looking closer into this. Although my findings are actually favoring the white downed chicks. I have yet to conclude anything on my line

Thank you for sharing!

If the cock bird you posted is the sire of your chicks, then you got yourself some good birds. Though someone has that same picture of the same bird on ebay and I have seen it used on several other sites including craiglist. I believe it is a Schock bird and of good quality.

That is the main reason that I don't count a bird as being from "so and so breeder's" line unless it came right from that person. Once another person starts choosing the pairs and breeding, it's no longer "so and so breeder's" lines. This might just be how I feel, but it's how I feel. Almost every Marans I have seen has been labeled as a Wade Jean or Bev Davis or even a cross of the 2 lines, when in actuality these birds are so far removed from the actual birds that came from either breeder that it's not funny.

Some of my birds don't even come from a breeder that I could list, and the ones that do will never leave my place and the breeder's name doesn't get tossed around when I talk about those birds. To me, once I use that bird as a breeder (all I will ever do with it since I will not show someone else's hard work and take credit for it), the offspring are now my line since the breeder didn't make the pairing for the offspring.

In turn I have smiled sometimes when someone starts telling me how good their breeding/birds are just because the parent stock came from a few good breeders. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

Well I guess I should have included what I am looking at in the study. I am seeing whether the amount of white down present produces a more intense beetle green plumage vs a flat black or even a purple hue, than that of one hatched with little white present. So far the results are different and I plan on doing this for a couple of seasons to get better numbers. The study has only been done with a couple hundred black Sumatra chicks.
A very interesting idea and I'd like to know what you discover.
I don't have enough Sumatras to help you on this. I had a few
but replaced them with a quad of much better birds earlier this
year and I don't have many chicks yet from the quad. I admit I
am somewhat incubator challenged and I'm just about ready to
employ someone's broody silkies.

My line of chicks tend to come out with a nice amount of white in the chest and some on the wings. All the ones I have raised so far have had nothing but the nice beetle green sheen. I have not come across any purple and i have not had any Sumatra chicks black or blue that were almost sold in color a a chick. I do have to get a photo of my little blue bantam pullet her lacing is coming in great and I can't wait for her to mature.

Sounds great Zack I really like your inputI I know you know alot about the sumatra line. Its the line, strain I have thats different I have to say now from your input. Zack is purple a good thing? So I have sumatras with purple and sumatra that have green. Yup that lady on ebay stole his picture from were I bought them and he is very angry at her. To many people on ebay use other peoples pictures when they sell eggs. But that is the parent stock. Thank You for the comp. Going to have to breed the two different line together to see what I get. I have 4 r-con incubators I can load up, LOL Some of the sumatras I got eggs from Zack and hatched them out to. Thank you again for them eggs Zack. This sumatra thread has the best input from people I have seen. Good people..
