Sumatra Thread!

You know it's dry out when the "I have to cut you down, than burn you in gasoline, and then dig up the sprigs as they regrow for 2 years to get rid of" native bushes are starting to wilt from lack of water.

You wouldnt want to get your fingers in the way of the blade on the jigsaw, you fingers would be but a thought after it. I need to go into town and get some more materials and then i can press on with more building!

I am very pleased with my broody sumatra hen, she hatched 4 chicks yesterday. It's her first time being a mum and she seems to be doing well, And the chicks look to have pea combs!

I just hatched out a bunch from this line also the old sumatra is parent stock. Whats real nice the chicks have no white on any of there wing feathers they are solid black wing feathers. There are a couple different breeds in the chick picture they are all not sumatra's. Black Sumatra

Just wanted to point out that it is characteristic of the Sumatra to have white down on the chicks, and a good thing to have on the wings. In fact, I am conducting the study/observation on the coloration of white down on black Sumatra chicks as opposed to their adult plumage :)

Well I guess I should have included what I am looking at in the study. I am seeing whether the amount of white down present produces a more intense beetle green plumage vs a flat black or even a purple hue, than that of one hatched with little white present. So far the results are different and I plan on doing this for a couple of seasons to get better numbers. The study has only been done with a couple hundred black Sumatra chicks.

Sounds interesting, I would love to know what you find out. I will also try to keep track here as to what I see, since I have seen chicks that are nearly half white in fuzz and some almost solid black fuzz. All of mine have had/ or get the white flights though as they feather in.
