When my kids started showing animals we had to purchase animals to start with. The bunnies had to be pedigreed no getting around it, so my sons first rabbits where not bred by him. Sadly a dog climbed our fence and killed all the pedigree bunnies he was breeding latter.
All our first birds where from a hatchery... I know not suppose to be SQ, but that is what we had, and interestingly the Geese where consistent winners. Only the Geese & ducks where breedable on our property as Roosters where not allowed. So all hens would have to be covered by someone else's rooster off property anyhow. I think what matters first is that the kids learn, have fun, and then they will naturally want to breed their own anyway. Keep it fun and the rest follows.
There will always be people who judge others harshly and are mean spirited, but the majority of people are sane enough to know everyone has different limitations to what they can & can not do. Most people showing want people to share the hobby with and want to encourage not discourage.
We only had really 1 horrible experience at show, some of my daughters birds had to be housed over night as they had been moved up in competition to compete at the next level the next day, and her birds where now competing for some serious awards, someone tried to kill them. They maimed some for life, who ever it was, was never caught, but only my daughters animals where targeted. They where really beautiful birds, till attacked, and I think they would have won hands down compared to the other Geese. Needless to say that really upset my kids, caused an emergency vet trip for the broken bones on the birds and slashing injuries. The Geese put up a good fight. Who ever did this is scum in my eyes.
So that is the 1 truly bad bizarre experience, & not a normal experience.
You will always have someone at shows with attitudes no matter the critter, but most people are awesome and good helpful people in my experience.
