I recently had a Sumatra hatch. I have a chick that is nearly all white. Just a touch of silver on it's head. Mama is a blue. I have 8 roo's , both blue and black, and assume a blue roo mated with her. Any chance it will stay light colored? Maybe a platinum? I'll try to get my cam to work, to take a pic later.

I'm on my 3rd generation of hatching this flock.

unless one of the parents was blue and one was dun it will not be platinum. Sounds to me like a blue to blue splash chick

somehow I forgot about splash. We will see. I thought I had a splash once, and It grew up into a blue. looked TOTALLY different feathered out. As soon as I get my camera fixed I'll get a pic.

some books say sumatra's are hardy birds and can handle cold next to heat is this true?
Can they stand Wyoming Winters?
hope to hear from you,

my Sumatra's are fine here in Upstate Ny. We had a hard winter this past year with temps a few times at 20 below zero, and had many 26 inch snowfalls. My Sumatra's seemed oblivious to it all. They went about life like it was 80 and sunny out. I am a firm beleiver that Sumatra's are winter hardy.

yep they take it both very well.
Heat is proven with me, It's been 95-105 air temp for the past 2 months here add 5-15 each day to for the heat index. Cold, well we dont know what that is here, we complain when it's 35, but never heard anyone with wintering problems. Most all breeds take it well, the comb is the only problem with frost bite, sumatras dont have that as an issue obviously.

Stony,

yes a pic would help, I too have had various breeds hatch looking splash and end up blue, but usually those that are pretty white as chicks will end up splash.
Once you see all 3 together one time, it's a pretty clear difference in them.

get ya a dun one and use the blues and you can make some platinums then
