Sumatra Thread!

I still can't sex my Sumatras. I think they're around 10 weeks old (Michael?) There is one that I'm sure is a boy, because his legs are a lot thicker than the other 5, but other than that...yeah, no idea. LOL

I think they were from the March 10 or March 17 hatch so if they are cockerels, they should start showing saddle feathers under the wing/at the edge of where the back/thigh area meets if that makes sense. A couple that we have from the same hatch are showing saddles but mostly pullets from that batch.

In total for our chicks, we got 2 splash bantams, 6 black bantams, and 8 blue bantams. For large fown we got 1 khaki LF, 35 dun LF, and 21 black LF. We shipped out 10 + duns to a guy down in Arkansas today, always nice spreading the bloodlines around and sharing the dun birds

Though I'm not certain I could ever actually get that lucky! LOL I LOVE my blue!!

Thanks guys for the sexing info! I knew not all breeds were feather sexable just wasn't sure if sumatras fell into thzt catagory or not.... let's just hope I got what I ordered! And I have been giving them about an hour or so of strict "me" time! I have the pair of sumatras and a pair of yokohamas I want very well socialised!
Got a long streach ahead of me before my lil peeps are big enough to have their own lil peeps! Hopfully I can get a good breeder pair soon!

I've had black Sumatras from Cackle for two years now. They have nice dark gypsy faces. My cock has turned out to be a man-fighter, especially during breeding season. I need to introduce some new blood in them so if anyone is interested in trading/selling eggs /chicks please let me know.

The hen in the background is not a Sumatra.

how did everyone get the Dunn, Chocolate and Khaki genes in their birds?

Does anyone know the genotype of black Sumatras.

I know the line of dun birds we have came from a cross to a pit game way back, not sure about other folks

I just found out Spectrum Ranch has some gorgeous Duns. Yes! I'm 15 minutes away. Now if only they'll be willing to part with them... or trade peeps... or something... I'm desperate...

Ah, and I'm pretty sure no one really has Chocolate Sumatras. Yet. I think they're all Dun so far... and they probably got that out of OEGB's, as far as I (and some people I've talked to) can tell. Those things have been around forever.

Spectrum Ranch has some nice Dun birds, I've tried contacting them several times with very little response. Hopefully you have better luck sourcing birds from them than I have.

I want to find a line of Black Sumatras that have good size, really birds that are a bit too large, I need to breed some size into my Dun and Platinum birds.
