Sumatra Thread!

Good looking birds everyone! We are getting ready to do the final cull. A few birds are being saved to go to new homes as soon as it cools off enough down south and the rest that aren't spoken for are going to the traders place. If anyone is interested in dun or black cockerels, let me know this week, they are going away on Friday

Crap. I REALLY need to get my camera out of pawn...any one out there also have Auburn Sumatras, with photos? I think mine are all girls, but not sure...not used to this type of comb (still new to it all), and can't tell by that - and none have even tried to crow (born 5/8).
Got only 1 Golden Lakenvelder rooster left (2 roosters & 1 hen killed by dog) and it's looking like all 5 Sumatras are hens...
*sigh*

sorry about the golden lakenvelders, are you gonna get more? They are very pretty. I cant wait til next year when I can get chicks odd od mine

Would love to see pictures of your sumatras, as I haven't seen that color before.

yes get that camera ...I'm still curious to see just what and auburn is.

On the birds you cant really tell anytime much by comb, they just about dont have one.
They are plenty old enough to feather sex with ease though.
Look at the hackle ( neck) and saddle area. If you see pointed thin feathers it's a boy. If you have rounded some what fat feathers in these areas it's a pullet. The body feathers pretty much will just flow into the tail with not much feather type change. On the males you should be seeing a distinct saddle area coming in at the base of the tail.

My sumatras as a breed dont crow very much at all anyway, so that route may be hard too.

You can also look at the spur bump area on the back of the legs. If you see good bumps going, along with the pointed feathering, you can bet for sure you have a male then.

yes get some pics!

No spur bumps...seems like the tails (that are slowly getting longer) might have a bit of a blue-ish sheen coming to them? Maybe it's the sunlight (we've got very heavy smoke in the air from the forest fires in the area). One bird is a bit lighter - more brown than red/brown. These are from SandHill Preservation hatchery - he sends the breed list with, and being in the business, I assume he knows his birds - and these all look alike & are the only ones that came in the correct number to match the list.
Rameriz - yeah, I'ma goinna hafta get me some more of the Lakenvelders - they're an absolutely gorgeous bird, as are these Sumatras! Looks like I'll have these two breeds for beauty, and the mixed-breeds &and Buckeyes next year!) for the egg/meat production! {Chicken math strikes again!}
