Sunflower Chickens

I agree and thanks for the advice. My wellie eggs are as dark as the WMs I want some dark eggs every year Just wondering what the influance is on other birds, Any TMI to discuss here. I do really like my wellies though they tend to be a bit dramatic.

Mike, if your Wellie eggs are that dark, you really should be selling them, because most people would be very excited about that. Many of the Wellie flocks in the US don't have that great a shade of color, and if you look back in auctions you can see what's being offered isn't always that nice. Just my thoughts!

Perfect photo!

I do think those are a nice color! You might just get interested in 'improving' your stock by choosing the darkest eggs for incubation only and only keeping the chicks that fit the Welsummer standard the best- there is always work to be done, and I know that the darker and specklier eggs make a line very attractive!

I need another breed like I need a hole in my noggin! I did have Wellies, but I sold my whole flock to a gal in Baldwin area over a year ago. I hope they are all doing well.

I do love them! The guys are certainly full of gusto, that's for sure. Not aggressive, but they'll tell you all about yourself, that's for sure! I love it.

Lovely chicks!

I'm looking forward to getting some shots of mine soon, but they're all hiding under the EcoGlows and the Mamas. When it's warmer tomorrow I'm sure I'll get some shots of the broodies' babies.

I'm seriously considering downsizing, but can't decide what breed(s) I could possibly let go of...I'm a hoarder.

So I've been looking at some Polish chickens recently and am extreamly tempted to get myself a pullet/hen. I've tried talking to the lady who owns them, but she basically just fills their feeders/waterers and thats it. No idea about temprament, egg laying ability, health issues, heat/cold tolerance, anything at all really. I've looked at some hatchery websites but would like to hear from actual owners.

My Silver Laced Large Fowl Polish is absolutely wonderful. Smart, curious, sweet and absolutely social, always wanting to be held. That being said, I raised her from hatch, held her often, and continue to do so. Many will tell you they are flighty, but with mine (I've had others, not just the one) I've never felt that way- BUT:

If you don't modify their tophats so that they can see well, you will have poorly adjusted birds who become crazed because they can't see anything. They are also walking targets because they can't see predators. The difference between them and Silkies is that Silkies are very...calm, almost sedate. Polish are active birds who want to roll around the yard like other breeds. The poor visibility makes them easily startled. I prefer to trim up around the eyes since I don't show them. They make great pets and lay like Leghorns, to boot.

Hi, everyone.

Popping in to remind everyone about the recognition awards.

We want to validate the efforts and contributions of our members who give sooo much. This community is special because of the efforts of its members, and we all want to honor that.

NOW: get to nominating, if you haven't already!

Remember, each BYC member may nominate one member each month for each of the three recognition categories: BYC Friend, BYC Educator, and BYC Spirit. That's three nominations each month, and we want to see more submissions!

Use the Nomination Submission Form to make your suggestions.

Thanks!

I've already burned up my nominations...like they were burning a hole in my pocket. I hope some great folks get recognition for all they give around here. I love this place!
