That's a heckuva deal! I called and the guy who is on the machine (business) sounds like the antithesis of the guy in the photo...so I left my number. Maybe he saw someone behind the photographer drinking his coffee? I'd look that mean if that happened.

Never been to Leavenworth...

Thank goodness it's a little cooler here today. We got just a sprinkle of rain, and we could have used more. A few miles away they got quite a bit more than we did.

I have some leghorns that are egg laying machines. Right now I have more eggs than I can sell, and if they aren't fresh, I won't sell them. Sometimes I get eggs that are cracked or very dirty. I just scramble those and feed them back to the chickens or the dogs. They go nuts for them. With this heat, I had this idea. Instead of just feeding them the scrambled eggs, I'm going to freeze them into blocks. That way I can take a block out to them in the afternoon, and they can peck at it as it thaws. How's that sound for a keep'em cool idea?

Oh, and I give them the egg shells too. They go nuts over them and seem to much prefer them over oyster shell.

Anyone else had this experience?

Ivywoods, I roast my eggs shells and feed them back. The girls do seem to prefer them over oyster shell. In the case of my cuckoo marans, I actually think their eggs are darker with the use of eggs shells as the calcium source. I have discussed this with ChooksChicks, she has some great thoughts that maybe she will share on why I am seeing this.

My coop is much happier now that it is cooler, however, on real hot days, we let them free range all day and they bury themselves in the woods. You see them only when they "streak" to the coop to lay an egg. And can I tell you, they lay those eggs pretty fast on a hot day, unlike today where they are taking their time! I can hear their "complaining" all the way in the house today as the favorite nesting boxes are in high demand!

No, I'm sad to report we still haven't gotten any. It sprinkled last evening for about 5 minutes but didn't even make the sidewalk wet.
