Super Mites

Do you have any wild birds getting into your coop or into your run? or any new birds making nests in the trees near your chickens?

Oh, i've never heard of using Frontline on chickens. i will look into that. i suspect i would need a prescription?

i have heard of using wood ash in their dust bath area. i just don't have any and not sure where to get it. i think part of the problem is the weather has been no wet. That particular pen tends to get wetter than the others, even though i've done a lot of work on water diversion. So they don't get to dust bath as often.

That pen is all 1/2" hardware cloth, so no birds can get in. But we do have lots of wild birds in the yard. i am constantly going out to chase off the Magpies. Then we have Blue Jays and sparrows. i know wild birds are loaded with bugs. Rats are also a problem. i currently have a rat who is most likely living under that playhouse coop. Have been trying to catch him/her for quite a while.

Nope dont need a prescription

You can get them from any veterinary clinic, usually you can just buy one tube at a time, I buy a large or medium dog to treat my hens and it is more than enough. If you want to buy 4 or 6 tubes you can buy is at TSC also. STAY AWAY FROM CAT FRONTLINE. it has a higher level of one ingredient an can be more dangerous, Just stick with the dog.

Hope this helps!

You could always make a small crate type deal for them to dustbath in, you could try to put some DE or immiticide in that and just keep it up off the ground in their coop. worth a try. If you try the frontline I would wait a few weeks before trying to treat with immiticieds other than DE just to be safe.

I've hear of people using front line too. Actually the first time I heard it being used for other animals was to cure mites in Guinea Pigs - Go figure. Worth a try use the smallest dog or puppy one you can find and only put a dot on her. Let us know if it works!

I have used puppy flea shampoo not dog shampoo. Heard the puppy type was safer for chickens. I use cardar shavings in their sleeping area. Is it all the chickens or just certain one / ones? I have found at least with dogs that some seem to be insect magnets.

I've been a people nurse for 25 yrs. with a specialty in pharmacology. Topical medecations that do not enter the blood stream would not effect the eggs. Any contamination of the egg would occur by skin contact after it was laid but then the egg is protected by its bloom and the shell. I would be more concerned with human contact that would occur when you apply it to your dog. You handle them all the time.

Thats what I was thinking too, but I was not 100% since they can sit on them, but then you have the shell for protection.
