super new

So glad you've joined us! This is definitely a great place to start building your knowledge and prepare for the adventure of chicken keeping. The Learning Center here at BYC is packed with great articles - and the forums are a great place to get your questions answered.

Glad you joined the flock!
What breed of chickens are you getting? If undecided, I strongly suggest Silkies - you won't regret it

Silkies are plentiful around here and they are lovely. Haven't decided yet. Am in need of a coop before I make my decision.

Layers. My dogs chase everything so can't free range and I'm not allowed to butcher on my property.

I highly recommend checking out all the coops and advice here on BYC. We built our coop with little research and luckily it is perfect, but I don't suggest doing as we did with little research. Some people have not had such good experience on building a coop without much research.

For layers, Plymouth Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, the Sex Link varieties, Orpingtons, and Leghorns are among some of the best layers.
