So... This appeared basically overnight, as far as I can tell. Is it a crest? Or...?
IMG_20230630_174418~2.jpg

The skull feels the same on both sides. (The poof is only on one side). The duckling is acting normal. It was one of the 3 ducklings that hatched earlier than it should have due to apparently low humidity in my coop. The duckling is about 2.5 weeks old.
Do crests appear later? I thought they showed up when hatched? I haven't researched it a bunch...
Any knowledge would be helpful.

Sorry I haven't been dropping cute duckling pictures, I picked up a bug from somewhere, and I haven't had energy or the ability to string more than 2 words together.

I had the oposite happen with my neighbor's tree back in 2014. It came down over the fence into my garden. It did damage my privacy fence as it is 6ft tall and wood, but didn't damage the 4ft chain link behind it. My neighbor, a woman in her late 60's, was a trouper and was round in my yard for several mornings at first light [I don't get out of bed at that ungodly hour] and cut up all the tree branches in my yard with her reciprocating saw, and dragged them to the kerb for me. We were both lucky. The branches only brushed my roof and I don't have a gutter along there to get damaged. If the tree had split the other way it would have come down on her kitchen.

My big anxiety now is the laurel oak trees in my adjacent neighbor's yard as they, too, are failing and if they come down my way, they will crush my duck house. One came down last year, but my neighbor was amazingly lucky as it fell diagonally across her back garden, away from my garden, and missed her house completely. But it scared us all as it sounded like a gun shot too close for comfort when it happened.

So the neighbor behind no longer has failing laurel oaks along the fenceline with me as I went half and half with her on having them removed. The neighbor next door and her behind neighbor still have their row of failing laurel oaks. I just hope the healthy Carolina laurel cherries in my yard, break the fall of any of those oaks if they fall my way, and protect my poor duckies!
The 4 foot chain link was not damaged either and kept the tree from crushing her garden
This tree was a healthy strong maple
But lightning is very powerful
Glad your story ended up with a good outcome too
Have you talked to the other neighbours about getting those trees taken down ?

I did a thing
My diva ducks deserve diva shelter
I found this old playhouse that was beat to crap
Removed all the side boards and inside things
Put brand new boards on and left the bottom half off on one side open and attached an old travel dog crate I redid to make an extension to the shelter
It also holds the feed to keep it out of the weather ( rain )
It did have 6 windows I removed 4 and covered over them
Left the front 2 but cleaned them up
Painted the house
Added planter boxes with fake plants from the dollar store
Then got a hanging plant holder ti attach stella the gooses toy
I have ti add the screens to the windows and build a new door that the bottom half will open so top can keep the sun out unless I need ti open it ti clean in there
The feed doorway won’t have a door
Old pic the lattice is because it was missing boards all the way around
Edited to add I’m making a slanted roof over the extension from the house that’s why it looks unfinished. It has a skylight in there so light will get in but have cover from the direct sun if that makes sense

Thank you
It’s not the night house just a place in the day to get out of the sun or weather ect
The night one is an old garage we made into a coop with an extension of an outdoor area to also give them a place to chase bugs , finish supper in the evening while I’m doing waters ect and a place to stay out of the snow in the winter it’s 12x10 Not done it all yet but getting there
I’ll post after I’m done
