Surprise Eggs in the Winter

We have an outdoor light that is attached to the house that shines out over that part of the yard. It was there before the chickens so we didn't put it up for them. I wonder if that is affecting their laying habits perhaps?

Probably not? First year layers don't seem as reliant on daylight as older birds.

Though assuming you keep that light going, it should be interesting next year to see if you get continued egg production over winter.

This is interesting. I was wondering why mine were so erratic. Mine are 18 months old. The Sussex heavily molted last autumn then in December she started to lay and has now stopped again.
Our very big maren has never laid since she moulded , not as heavily as the Sussex but more than the other maren. I thought it was to do with her being so fat.
The smaller maren did a light moult and now lays an egg every two to three days.
The weather here has been mostly dull and cold. Their up around 9 in the morning and roost around 6pm.

It is normal and you should be happy :) my two pullets started laying eggs in the middle of the winter, almost everyday I get two eggs from them :)

Keep them fed well and provide an extra night meal if you can :) mine worked perfectly
