Well we discovered a Hen hiding on a nest chick full of eggs. hers and some others as well. No idea how old so can't eat em of course. so we dug the incubator back out and crammed as many of the for sure fertile eggs into it some of them are dark enough they might be easter eggs. I figure most are at least two weeks out. Weren't planning to hatch any of our own this spring we bought some from orschelens TSC. Supposed to be a self turning 9 egg incubator we have about 24 eggs crammed in there of course will have to hand turn them. Stinker birds The Brooder is gonna be crammed I have 25 bantams to pick up from Cackle Hatchery in a week and a half. Oh well they can be work but I love having the peeps around. even though I have learned not to handle to much when they are fluffy and cute. I go and talk to em several times a day so they get used to my mug lookin at em.

Well suprise suprise. We left early this morning to go to Cackle Hatchery to pick up my little bantam bundles of joy. ready to come home 2.jpg Ready to come home!
Made it home.jpg Made it home finally they were soooo thirsty poor babies. And anyway the incubator is bouncing all around when we finally get home. and TADA! suprise! chicks.jpg Suprise 11 hatched while we were gone. One is still in the incubator wet, and another one has a good size pip and is working on the zipping. so 12 hatched in one day. That would be the darkest ones we picked out another ten or so potentials that were much lighter probably have another week for those if they finish up . All of them are beautiful but one of them is going to be a beauty of an easter egger. I'd bet she is pure americanna from our ameri hen and bred by our ameri roo. fingers crossed for it being a pullet. so knew it was gonna be a big day but wow what a day!!

Up to 16 on our hatchlings with 5 potentials left! Latest came out of a pretty blue egg so hoping for another nice Amiricauna pullet. One more blue egg in there hoping for it to hatch. Of course hoping for all 5 to hatch but failures are expected so hoping the bad juju doesn't get the blue one. Have had to throw out 6 or so for leaking and cleanup over and over. But such is life. For an un planned hatch we are getting awesome results. and lovely lively chickie babies.
edited to say I'll get more and better pictures in a couple days. Getting them from phone to puter is a PITA so I try to keep it to the minimum my excitement and needs allow.

Well the suprises never cease. Apparently the girls and god have decided we need to substantially grow our flock. Just this last week we have had one of our girls hiding when we put the rest to bed at night. So I did a full on search with my wife last evening finally found her way up under the pool deck I built between the pool and the rocked wall that it sits beside. On a nest of between 15 to 20 eggs. She saved up one heck of a clutch before she decided to sit. After we found her and I crawled down in there and fell off the wall and got myself stuck and got her out. We had more discussion and the wife decided to go with me on just letting her brood them. soo I'll do what I can to block her off and make her safe. And put food and water closer for her and in about 2 weeks I'm guessing we will have more peeps around I"m going to try to let her raise them and socialize them to the flock as long as she is able to protect them on her own. I"ll intervine if the chicks are in serious danger of course. so wow 16 so far in the incubator 3 potentials and who knows how many little girl will hatch. And the 10 or so she bought at tractor supply that she actually wanted for her flock this spring. my oh my looks like Im gonna have to hurry up on my banty coop so I can expand hers :D

Well we have a solid 15 from the incubator that have already migrated to the outdoor (garage) brooder. I have put off posting about pretty girl under the deck because it is a sad affair. we had severe storms a couple weeks ago. With high winds and lots of electrical activity We had several very big strikes very close and our theory is that those scared her off the nest and she got out in the wind and was blown off somewhere and probably soaked through and died of hypothermia. I now feel really bad about letting her stay on that nest outside the coop. I had already crawled down in there and got her. but since I couldnt also get the eggs and because I wanted a "natural" birth and integration we let herback on the nest. Poor girl. :hit
