Surprise we are gonna hatch chicks soon.

We didn't really NEED more chicks. But she had worked soo hard to find a good place made a good nest and was so dilligent with getting feed and water every morning and disappearing again back to the nest. I had put out food and water near for her so she wouldn't have to go so far from her nest and not attract undue attention. Added overhead shelter and she would have been fine through any normal storm. I really wanted to see the miracle as God has planned it. Perhaps another time under slightly more controlled circumstances. Don't think I could take a chance like that again. I am building completely self contained breeder/brooders in my new coop plan to let my silkies and cochins and D'uccles hatch their own I plan to have it set up to not be as much a strain on the mothers so they don't lack nutrition or watter etc. And safe zones for the chicks to get into as they are integrated into the flock by thier mothers. And no more heat lamps twoce now I"ve had a exploder with them luckily no ill effects and it was when it was warm enough chicks didn't suffer. But no more worrying that chicks have eaten glass getting brooder heat plates and or pads from now on. It's bad enough that you will always have some losses without being the cause of it.
