(Now what?)

((Okie-dokie, let's go! :weee ))

All was quiet for a long while in the den. Then, suddenly Jet spoke up, his tone innocent and his eyes bright as if nothing that had been discussed had stayed with him. "Are we still going to the Ritualist's Tree?" he asked, struggling a bit with the word 'Ritualist'.

Mystery looked at him with wide eyes, as if feeling this was a bit tactless to say. But then he thought about it, and he glanced to Dixie. "Really, there isn't anything we can do," he said gently. "Maybe we should go, just get away from it all for a day or two." He offered her a small smile, one he hoped would convey caring and comforting.

Dixie nodded slowly. "Okay," she agreed sadly. "Let's go, then." She got to her paws so quickly it seemed as though she didn't want to spare another moment for the packlands. Raven got to her paws. "Oh! We didn't tell Jade!" Raven exclaimed.

Jade was already there, though. "I already heard," she chuckled. "Actually, I'm, uh... I'm gonna stay here, I think," she said.

Mystery stood, braced for the journey ahead, but at Jade's words, he turned to her. "I understand," he said gently. "Be safe. We'll be home in a day or two." He smiled warmly, giving his daughter a gentle nudge on the cheek before turning back to the rest of them again. "Zeb, you and Aiden are welcome to come as well, if you'd like," he offered. "As for the rest of you, let's get going!" He sounded quite excited at that, and turned to lead the way out of the den.

He came to a halt at the gate to the junkyard, looking back to see who followed. Minty was there, of course, as eager as she had been from the start. Indy and Jet seemed to have stopped half way from the den to wrestle as they did in their youth. Clearly, the idea of such a trip had brought out the pup in them again. "Boys," barked Mystery, and they were drawn from their game, out of breath already by the time they joined their father at the gate.

((Sorry I wasn't on yesterday. I had harp, and I was out pretty late afterward as well, so I was tired.))

Jade chuckled. "Aw, Dad, I will," she said, nudging him back, rougher, grinning as if to emphasize the good intentions of the shove. "Now go have fun!" she added in a high voice. She wagged her plumy tail a bit. Aiden and Zeb looked nervous. Zeb wanted to be there for her mother if she came back.. But Aiden looked as if he wanted to go and she knew he needed her.

"We'll come," she decided, after looking to Cosmo, the two exchanging looks that seemed to convey a silent, encrypted conversation.

Mystery nodded welcomingly to the two. "Then let's head out," he said, his voice charged with energy. He led the way, passing through the junkyard gates and out into the city. His memory of the trail to the Ritualist's Tree was vivid, and he felt as if he was walking in his own pawsteps again, crossing streets and ducking down alleys.

When he crossed the border of Chroma pack's territory, he heard Indy and Jet start chattering excitedly behind him. The journey was long, and made more arduous by the boys wanting to explore every nook and cranny of the city beyond that point. But soon, as the sun began to set on the horizon and the sky was painted in bold colors, Mystery slowed to a stop, the tree in sight just ahead.

A soft, mournful song wove its way through the air, softly hitting Mystery's ears. He felt himself shake, both with joy and relief. Though he had been confident before that Zahlia was safe, that song was like proof. Now he really knew. He glanced to Dixie, his eyes shimmering with unshed tears, then continued on ahead toward the tree.

The song came to a sudden stop as Mystery approached the tree. At its base, he could see three figures. One stood as suddenly as the song had ended and hurried into the den at the roots of the tree. Mystery furrowed his brow curiously at that, but didn't slow his pace. The closer he came, the more he recognized the two remaining figures. One was Xhanli, as was to be expected for he was known as the Ritualist. The other, to Mystery's surprise, was the Willow pack medical dog, Grimm.

Seeing their approach, Grimm had stood up defensively, his namesake expression on his face Xhanli was calmer, though, a note of recognition in his grayish eyes. "Calm yourself, Healer," he murmured, just as Mystery stopped just on the grass that grew in the lot the tree stood in. He then looked to Mystery and his family with a warm expression. "Welcome back, oh mysterious one," he said with a dip of his head.

Grimm calmed easily, sitting back down. He looked over the group of dogs, his eyes pausing on Dixie for a few moments longer than the rest.

In the mean time, Mystery offered the Ritualist a smile. "Hello, Xhanli," he replied, matching the ritualistic dip of the head that the bone-mouth Shar Pei had offered him. "Grimm," he added in greeting, nodding to the medical dog. "We've traveled a long way to see you."

Xhanli looked modest. "I am honored." And again, he dipped his head. "You must be his family, then," Xhanli said, turning to the rest of the dogs in tow. "My name is Xhanli, and this is Grimm." Grimm nodded as he was introduced, though he remained silent. It was not that he was unfriendly, but it was simply Grimm's way.

((Hope that was alright--I wanted to get to the good part! ))

Raven padded along, silently, keeping her alert for anyone else around. She pressed her side against Dixie's as she walked. Her stomach continued to lurch, which was becoming agitating. She thought back to the funny smelling baloney she had eaten the time just before her sisters had found her. She figured that was what it was bothering her.

She yawned, tired from walking. But the scenery was nice. Hearing the singing, her only thought was that it was a nice song.

But two dogs reacted far differently. Her father... and Cosmo.

Cosmo's ears perked and her tail wagged in wide swings, as her eyes glistened as Mystery's did. "Grandma.. !" she gasped, barely able to contain herself, she rushed ahead. But at the Shar-Pei's rushed stance, she stopped in her tracks, glowering at him. Who was this?!

But as she saw her father's exchanged greetings, she relaxed, and even more so when Dixie proceeded to say a few words to the other males; after all, if anyone, her mother could have a bad feeling about a dog.

"Fellas," she greeted calmly.

Mystery introduced his family one by one, motioning to each in turn. As he gave the last name, which happened to be Jet's, he turned back to Xhanli and Grimm. "And my last daughter, Jade, decided to stay at home for this trip," he finished.

As each name was given, Xhanli nodded to each dog, his smile unfaltering. "It is so nice to meet you all," he said kindly. "And what brings you to my tree?"

Mystery looked a bit sheepish. "Well, a few things. Firstly, we were hoping you knew of Zahlia's fate," he said, eying Xhanli as if searching for his reaction.

"I do," he replied. "The Chorister has been residing with me." The Shar Pei motioned toward the den dug between the tree's roots. "Siyu, I think it's safe," he murmured, and with that two dogs emerged. The first looked like the pup Mystery had seen here moons ago. She had grown, possibly only a few months older than his most recent pups, and she had become quite pretty, her fur brownish with black on her muzzle and ears. The second, who drew Mystery's attention more, was Zahlia, his mother.

"Zahlia," he murmured, and he stepped forward to greet her. Zahlia didn't seem thrown at all to see him, padding over. "My son," she replied, and she pressed her nose into his forehead as they paused there. "It's good to see you."

Mystery withdrew and gave her a smile. "But Slate said he attacked you. He said you..." He paused, looking away for a moment.

Zahlia shook her head. "I know what Slate was trying to do. But when I told him I knew he would become what he had, I knew exactly who I was talking to. I know you better than that, my son."

At this, Mystery brightened. Returning his attention to Xhanli, he looked to be in a much better mood. "The other thing is we were wondering if you minded at all if we stayed here for the night." He grinned, looking hopeful, and Xhanli's expression didn't disappoint him.

"Of course!" replied the Shar Pei. "You've picked an excellent night, as a matter of fact. It's the night of the new moon!" He glanced toward the darkening sky, his eyes wide.

Siyu, rolling her eyes a bit, looked to Mystery and his family. "My father is known as the Ritualist," she said, unsure if the dogs knew this or not, "and this is the night of one of his rituals."
