Swampson, hard-headed as ever, glared right back. "She would'a died, Endigo! She would'a died an' taken innocent lives with 'er! Ya can't tell me you'd'a done any different if ya knew how!" he yelled, looking furious. "I'm a medical dog. It ain't my job t'a look at a she-dog, lyin' in 'er own blood, shakin' with fear an' pain, an' tell 'er I can't do a thing for 'er!"

Endigo's eyes softened, but his expression remained grim. "Nevertheless, you have helped the enemy. You have helped the enemies. Those 'innocent lives' will, through Jargo and Harli's training, grow into killers, dogs that will slaughter us and cause our pack to go extinct! You have betrayed your own pack!"

Gain, Endigo's expression softened more. Then he spoke once more; "But, I guess that proves that we're the good guys. Just don't expect any grattitude from them or their kind, or any of the Jargoan Pack, for you will receive none."

Taj chuckled heartily, padding over. "Hey, truce, man," he said, a jolly sparkle in his eyes. He looked down at the scrawny fish, dwarfed in size sitting by Sylver's catch. Then, he looked to Sylver, an almost sly look on his face. "So, Sylv, have you ever eaten fish before?" he asked.

"It's my job," Swampson replied in reference to gaining gratitude, cooling down after losing his temper. He fell silent for a long time, then looked back at Endigo again, his eyes cold and hard. "Can I tell ya a story?" he asked hesitantly.

Sylver's brows furrowed with suspicion. "Um, no. Why?" She leaned into Taj, her eyes glaring with mock anger.

"Try it, man," Taj said with a smile, "you'll never forget it." He picked up the tiny fish and offered it to her, looking a little too excited to see what her reaction would be.

Endigo smiled, and sat down. "Sure. I love a good story." he looked at Swampson, letting him know that he had his attention.

Swampson sat as well, thinking for a few moments, and then speaking. "When I was a lad, pro'ly right around yer age, I met a lass that I knew I couldn' live without. Beautiful, she was. Eyes like starlight an' the sweetest laugh ya ever heard." He shook his head, smiling at that thought. "Soon a'nuff we were a couple, expectin' our first. I was gettin' training from my ma, medical dog stuff. Looked like life was gonna be perfect fer me an' the lass."

His expression hardened again, and at last he looked to Endigo again. "But there was a problem, an' the young'ns were comin' early. First six came still. We were heartbroken. Then Sonya was born." Swampson's voice shook, and he had to stop for a moment. "Beaut', she was, so small an' perfect... Had t'a fight ter keep her alive, I did, but sure as, she pulled through." He sighed lightly, his eyes half-closing. "But it weren't all sunshine. See, my lass, she had some'n wrong. I tried everythin', but... it weren't any use."

Swampson's eyes met Endigo's. "I know ya think I did ya wrong. I did all 'o the pack wrong. But when I saw that lass today, lyin' there in the den, an' I knew no'un else could'a helped... I had t'a do somethin'." Finally, he fell silent, his gaze not moving from Endigo.

Endigo looked at him, his eyes sad. "That's... that's terrible." he said softly. He looked at Swampson. "So that's why you saved her and her pups... that's awful; that's an awful thing to have to... that's awful..." Endigo stuttered, searching for the right words.

(Did you and Silkies plan that whole think, from the time Harli started having trouble?)
