Minty wasn't sure what to say--her plan had not yet formulated in her mind. Her mouth opening and closing a few times, she finally managed to speak. "Unka Celeste, I wanna be a digger like you. Can I please, please, please come digging wif you today?" Batting her little green eyes, she looked to him hopefully, putting on her best cute face.
Celeste was surprised by her sudden mind-change. Last he heard, she wanted to be the "affla". Getting to a sitting position, he looked at her. "Hold on just a second, little girl," he said. Blinking a few more times to get rid of the sleep in his eyes, he added. "Now, I though you wanted to be an 'affla', not a low-rank Digger, like me and Morado and the others."

Minty blinked innocently up at him, her brows raised. She gave him a look like 'silly Celeste', shaking her head slowly as she did. Then, in a fairly exaggerated tone, she said, "That was days ago. I wanna be a digger now." With a confident smile, she nodded quickly to assure Celeste that her mind was made up for sure this time, although her mind had also been made up for sure when she wanted to be affla, and also when she wanted to be a sentry like her parents, and she had been close to making up her mind 'for sure' when she wanted to be a hunter, too.

Celeste sighed. This was not a winning battle! He looked at her again and tried to intimidate her out of it with words. "Are you sure, Minty? There's glass all around and they cut your feet, and there's rats that nibble your toes... And..." he leaned closer, as though to tell her a secret, "... There's a trash monster in the tunnels. We have to fight him each time we go to work,"

Minty gasped. "Really?" she asked quietly, as if she expected that if her voice was too loud, the monster would appear in Celeste's den. Her tail held high, her eyes widened, and an open-mouthed smile crossed her maw. "Cool! Is it like us or like a humban? Can I see it? Please? I'll stay out of the way, I promise!"

Meanwhile, back in the family's den, Mystery awoke with a sigh, stretching and blinking sleepily up at the ceiling of the den. "Morning," he murmured quietly, nuzzling Dixie's cheek. Then, he sat up to greet his pups. Ah, still asleep it would seem... A smile crossed his maw. There was Raven, whose paw was looking better already under Saffron's care, and Jade, his little boy, and Minty was--Mystery's eyes opened wide suddenly. Minty was gone!

He was on his feet in an instant, looking around in horror. "Minty? Dixie, Mint's gone!" he said, keeping his tone low enough that he hoped not to wake the other two pups at least.

((Be right back. :) ))

"Yes..." Celeste said. "And he loves the tender flesh of..." he lowered his voice to a whisper and finished his sentence. "... Little puppies, especially little girls with green eyes." Sitting back with a serious expression, he looked at her. "Are you sure you want to be a Digger?" he asked.

Dixie leaped to her feet. "What?!" she gasped, horrified. Raven was immediately awakened by the raised voices and blinked sleepily. "Mommy? What's going on, Mommy?" she asked, her face droopy with sleep.

(Okay.)

((Sorry I disappeared for so long. I went to my room to find that Rangi hopped out of the brooder at some point today. She has to have been without food and water for hours. She was so weak and feels like she lost weight. :( I got water in her, but she wouldn't eat and I'm worried about her...))

(Oh no! The poor little thing... I will keep her in my prayers for certain!)

Mint leaned forward as he whispered, her eyes wide with curiosity. How exciting! But something occurred to her, and she gasped suddenly. "...I have green eyes!" she said, as if it was a big revelation. Her green eyes filled with tears, and she sniffed a few times, feeling terror creep over her. And then, she let out an ear-shattering wail and began to cry.

Mystery quickly scanned the den again, though it was obvious by then that Minty wasn't there. Looking to Raven, he kept his calm and said, "N-Nothing's going on, sweetie. Why don't you--" But before he could finish that thought, a familiar voice wailed out from outside the den. "Minty!" Mystery gasped, not waiting for Dixie. Running to the opening of the den, he darted outside, listening for his daughter.

Quote: Celeste kept his hard, grim expression but had to fight to keep from chuckling at the way she said that she had green eyes. "No, no, no, it's okay, it only comes after you when you're deep, deep in the mines," he said. He picked her up, hearing Mystery's voice, and began carrying her to him. "Yo, Mystery, Minty just popped in for an early visit. She's fine," he said.
