Layla started to cry. She loved Scout so much, and didn't want to see him hurt. She rested her head under his chin, inhaling his scent. "Scout, thank you." She whispered.

Jargo burst through the bushes and, his eyes flickering with evil delight, growled to Scout: "I'll have to kill you, now! You're in my territory!"

The dogcatcher cried out as another dog flew at his throat. He took a rod from his truck and stood, ready to defend himself. With Sonya ensnared with one pole, Sedna unconscious in another, and a dog confronting him, the guy knew this would be a task. He knew he needed to get the unconscious dog into the truck before she woke up. He didn't know how to handle the other 2.

Jargo growled back, not moving from his place. "You can't force me to give her up, either!" he growled, his eyes blazing. "And"---he advanced towards Scout---"If she leaves, she will have to leave Melanie behind! Which means that I have the freedom to kill Melanie!"
