Surviving Minnesota!

Yes Ralph...they are real sweeties. Almost as fun as my turkeys. ;) I will say they are the best foragers. Big Betty will lead her band of SS into my garage & they will spend hours hunting for bugs. But as you can see in my pic, they do not have a delicate turn to their ankles! So I've never found that an indication of sex. Just the tail thing.

Hope you've recovered from your turkey hen whooping!

MNchickmom...SS are almost impossible to sex early. I've had them for years. The only thing I've noticed is that the girls seem to grow tail feathers earlier than the boys. Also, my girls are built like little tanks and they have very stout legs & feet.

even if they are male they are good young males as of now. They do have little knows starting to bud from their "ankle" area. I will just have to be patient and see.

The hen in that picture is Betty and at 6 years old is still laying eggs. About 3 a week. The funny thing about SS is that their feather pattern changes after each molt. The older they get the more white spots they get. So I've had to learn to tell them apart by the shape of their combs.

NO  NO  NO.. do not tell me you have all boys!

I am going to feel terrible if you did not get a girl.   However, those look like some pretty stout hen legs and combs on them.  I do find the SS to be hard to sex compared to other breeds so there is hope..

If they turn out to be all males I will be back for more. These chicks have proved to like the great outdoors and enjoy foraging and are very docile.

Good Morning. Sorry to be so late to greet this a.m. Thanks for waiting Ralphie. It was fun the first couple times and now I deed you first place for posting. You are a good poster Ralphie.

i thought my Sussex were two hens and one roo; then I thought two roos and one hen; now I think they are all three hens. That makes me happy only because I do not want another rooster. It is difficult to tell what they are and I watched those little legs alot. Their combs are not even pink and all three combs are in the same stage of development. My SS are nine weeks now.

I will get pictures today and post. however, I am not receiving your pictures Klops and MnChick. Sounds as if others have been viewing them. hmmmmmmm . . . .

This is day 10 of this 'cold.' Feeling a little worse again today. So more lethargic in general. OR I WOULD HAVE POSTED FIRST RALPHIE! Oh, but no competition I just said. I think I lied. stay alive today Ralphie.

Has anyone done the free upgrade to windows 10? my computer keeps on bugging me to do it and I'm afraid. They are getting more aggressive and I don't know if W10 is good or will it screw up things. I am used to this 8-1 version and am getting too old to learn new things.
