Surviving Minnesota!

Has anyone done the free upgrade to windows 10? my computer keeps on bugging me to do it and I'm afraid. They are getting more aggressive and I don't know if W10 is good or will it screw up things. I am used to this 8-1 version and am getting too old to learn new things.

I took the upgrade months ago, I kept it about 5 days and reverted to windows 8...

I hated it, I will avoid it until the last possible moment...then switch to apple.

1 chick has hatched, 1 pipped and one is almost out. The other hasn't pipped yet.

The one chick that hatched is black, that's about all I could tell this morning after I moved the hen

Ralphie I saw your post on the Legbar . I am really disappointed in the breed and efforts for a standard . First the term duckwing is misunderstood by most . It is the blue area on a mallard wing . Compares to secondaries on a chicken . All Legbar are duckwing . Had this discussion with ChicKat before . They were saying back then that Legbar should be crow wing . Crow wing is the Birchen , Brown Red , and black copper . Black in that area of the wing like a crow's wing .

First they want a dual purpose size out of a Leghorn based breed . Difficult

Now they want crisp barring . You need slow feathering gene to get crisp barring . Leghorn and most breeds are fast growing feathers . This produces cuckoo . Blurred barring . So again difficult .

Single combs and crest do not work well = crooked combs . So difficult .

I am sure they will pick types of color that will require double mating . Cockerel line that produces show cockerels / cocks . Then a pullet line to produce pullets / hens for show . Again difficult .

Punnet probably never intended to make show birds . He was interested in genetics . He wanted to prove you could get blue eggs with single combs . He chose cream since it was a rare or odd gene . Created a true breeding golden duckwing color . Barring for auto sexing . He was having fun IMO . Just a good layer of blue eggs that is easy to sex .

Now for the crooked combs I read years ago that some of the old stringmen ( show people ) would insert a surgical needle in cockerel combs to keep them straight in summer grown cockerels . They removed them later when the comb was done growing .

So in a nut shell the standard will be stacked against you . Very old trick IMO .Only those in the know will be able to win .

Hmmm looks like a rant . OK rant over .

Thank you for the info, so I was right :) if something is free there must be something wrong with it.

We upgraded (downgraded) at work. I demanded to be reverted to Windows 8. IT said no way possible, I responded with no way you are getting your paycheck. Magically, Windows 8 came back. Windows 10 from a professional standpoint still has some bugs to work out....so I will not be updating the home computer anytime soon.

Looking for help identifying my speckled Sussex. They are exactly 6 weeks old today. Based on combs and thick legs I'm going with all cockerereal. I don't deal well with surprises can someone help? Ps I will be enrolling my daughter in holms photography 101 this summer.

I heard....that if their chests are mostly white at that age, they're roosters. I HEARD. Lol

I have three that are 6 weeks as well. I'll get some pictures on here later and we can compare them. I have no idea what mine are. I'm just waiting for a crow :)

These are chicks from Ralphie....I am secretly hoping they ARE roos. Then it would yield another trip to visit Ralphie with my 9 year old son.....he has been making a list of questions for his 4H project to ask an expert. Figuratively speaking I could kill 2 birds with one stone....Ralphie could feel the pain of educating an inquisitive 9 year old and I could replenish my SS chick stock.

We moved the SS and golden comets from the shed to the new 'Ralphie coop' today. This is the first time i have handled each of them since they have grown their full feathers and look what i found! One of them has muffs?!?

I have walnut grafts budding . Hope they grow . Butternut , Carpathian and heart nut on black walnut .

I have pear budding on hawthorn . I read it would work . So a quick pear tree in the woods for wildlife .

Butternut should grow up north . Ray Hauck has a black walnut at the lake . Pushing the limits there but it is alive .

My haskap / honey berries are growing really well .

My carmine Jewel cherry is growing good . A U of Saskatchewan introduction .

Anyone hear of or try the Evans cherry tree up north . A Canadian sour cherry believed to be a seedling of Montmorency . Also known as Bali here . Seems a start was smuggled into the USA and renamed Bali after the guys daughter . Often referred to as Evans / Bali here .
