It does not matter if all you want is eggs . Actually hatchery bred egg breeds will usually lay more eggs .

And no I don't think you are a loser because you thought you'd have the eggs but you don't! I'd like to take that SS egg but to go get just 1 would be silly, what are the BA's mix do you think?
I don't care much for the CLB's I've had them in a mix and no.... really pretty, cute but no.

You folks into motorbikes, this is the bike my DH has been restoring since November in his spare time. It's almost done and I think it looks dang good- even if I'm not into bikes!

There is no magic number in anything chicken related....remember chicken math?!! What works for me might not work for you or vice/versa. I usually try to keep rooster/hen ratio around 1 rooster for 5 to 10 hens. As I said before alot depends on area.

I don't think Strombergs have any chickens in Minnesota at all, they are all shipped from out of state. At least that was the way they were about 30 years ago. I bought my first ever incubator from them and since we were going to be in the area, we just stopped to pick it up instead of shipping and they only had supplies there, no chickens or even baby chicks.

eta: Maybe that was closer to 35...... maybe 40 years ago.

Figures... and just wanted to clarify I really don't care about whether they are from a hatchery or breeder because all I want is eggs. I just worried that maybe they would not be as healthy if coming from a hatchery vs. a breeder. Forgive me....I am new

I am only one year old as a chickener. That is why I asked if it mattered whether the chicks are hatchery grade or breeder grade if I want only the eggs. I think breeder grade is important if a person wants to show birds.

And thanks Jerry. You are an encyclopedia. I am glad to read that sometimes hatchery chicks may be better layers. Say Jerry, would a breeded bird be heartier / heathier than a hatchery bird? It kind of makes sense that they might be. Cost wise they are more expensive right?

Additionally, the 'boilers' that I see advertised for freezer birds - they grow so fast! Whats that all about?

Just had to run around and close up the house. Very strong skunk odor! Sprayed very close and no breeze! The birds are all locked up but my cats are running around. Wonder if one of them tangled with PePe

On the fence about loading up the critter gitter and taking a walk but it is nose tingly strong out there so I will stay in I think. Peeeeeeeeeeew

Muscovy ducks, but I don't know if any will hatch. I didn't like how the eggs looked when I put them in lockdown. I have 8 other eggs that are about 10 days in and all are fertile and looking good so far. My one duck is sitting on 18 eggs the last I counted and another on 6. Times like this I wish I had a nice broody Cochin or Silkie.

What would happen if a broody was sitting on eggs a week apart in the incubation process? My guess would be she'd get up and take care of her first hatch discarding the others. But I really have no idea.

And my neighbor does have homing pigeons. I figured that much out. Here's my not so great pictures from the road....Lol...

I think this was already mentioned, but with Barred Rocks the roosters will definitely be lighter due to the double barring gene they carry. That should be clearly noticeable by 8 weeks (I'm not sure how old yours are). I have two GLWs that are 7 weeks old and I have no idea what they are! You'll have to fill me in if you learn any Wyandotte tricks. The only trick I have so far is a crow.

I hope they hatch! I don't know, I'm guessing she would give up on the unhatched too. Thank you for the hard-earned pics! But do you think you could maybe walk on the other side of the coop next to the house and get some pics from there?

The BA's are pure BA's. I am just worried because of the heavy molt the rooster has, he may not have done his job.
