Surviving Minnesota!

Quote: Thank you Ralphie, but I have you at a disadvantage, I only have the one coop, and I only have 5 hens, sooo.... I don't have the workload you do! But, I'd love to have your place and all your coops and birds! I hope someday when I retire!

Thank you Cluckies and Ralphie, tomorrow I'll check if the fluid is in her belly or crop. I think it was clear.

The King is getting knocked off his throne. :D

My hens aren't laying much at all now, just that time of the year, I don't think it's because of broodies.

Agreed, check her crop tonight, is it squishy like a water balloon?  then check it in the morning, should be empty, if it is still like a water balloon she has sour crop.

Oh I have to get out of bed and check it tonight? :p

It's her crop.

Quote: Naw, lol, just check it in the morning. sometimes when you push on the crop, or squeeze it a little water will come out their beak as well. Some people say to tip them so their head is down at a slant and water will come out, if you do this, be careful as they can aspirate and get the water in their lungs and die in a few days. I don't turn them upside down. you can feel it if it is water balloony.

I was in the flower beds all day today and watching my brooder chicks who were in the garden with me. They had a blast today. June and Patsy. Loretta looks gorgeous. Dixie has been taking fine care of her.

Planted some annual flower seeds. Zinnias, bachelor buttons, and straw flowers. Mowed the lawn and stained and fixed up the free range nest box.

Rving this weekend. DS put on a walleye clinic. DH was proud but also wanted to help provide for the family. I broke my left middle toe by stubbing it on the sofa in the RV. It is purple, large and buddy taped to my second toe.

Cluckies get well. Last time I had a cold starting I had success with hot brandies. Warm water, raw honey, squeezed lemon and a shot of EJ.

Siggie the new coop looks gorg! Lucky chickens!
Ivie i am sorry about Tom. But he's a proven Son ofa gun and his time is done. You are right you probably have some nicer boys coming up the ranks. You are tailoring your flock to meet your needs. And you don't need Tom.

Ralphie: I remember that secret nest from last summer don't i? Sneaky girls. Congrats on your PC eggs.

I need to go to bed. Shut off the lights as the June bugs are knocking on the glass.

Night night.

Heading to San Francisco now.

I can almost guarantee that I will have NO fun. I'm rooming with my 2 least favorite people in my class. And right now its 4:20 in the morning

Was it a clear to "golden" color? If she is old and has Ascites it is that color. You should be able to push on her abdomen and feel it. It is just a fluid build up caused by heart and or kidney's not functioning as they should. You could try chicken dialysis.

Sorry about the he 4 years old is not that old for that to happen. I had a 3 year old that died this spring, just fell off the roost and was dead on the floor. I suppose it can be anything at any time just like with us.

I feel bad about Tom Hanks, It is my fault as I was there with my grand kids. He can be so fast when he wants something. He has no fear, so maybe this will put a little fear in him.

We got some great lilacs though! I am hoping they grow. I put mine in right away and watered them. I have my fingers crossed.

I moved Bert and his harem to another pen quite a ways from King George. Hopefully, that will end the chasing of Bert by King George. King George pooped in his hat tonight. He saw one of Sven's hens by the bird feeder and went running to rape her. She screamed and Sven came on a dead run. He hit King George hard he flew about 3 feet when he was hit. He got up and shook himself off and was going to go for Sven, when Sven came at him again. It does my heart good to see King George be put in his place.

He must have upset JJ also, about an hour later I saw JJ on his tail and King George pedaling his butt as fast as he could away.

I have PC eggs again. I did not check the PC hen yesterday, but I have 2 eggs today! As soon as I took the broody out of the coop the other one started laying again. Is that normal? I have never seen a hen quit laying because another one is broody before.

I caught an egg eater today, and it was NOT Pearl (the dog)! It was one of my 4 penciled EE hens. They all look alike so I do not know which one it is. I have thought I had a lot of broken eggs and I was putting it down to clumsy birds. I caught her with a hole about nickel size reaching in and sucking out the yolk! If I catch her or figure out who she is she will be sharing the same fate as Tom Hanks. I have no time of an egg eating hen. Does anyone know how to break one of this?
Since you asked about breaking egg eaters I will share . Beware this may seem harsh but less harsh than the ax . Take a pair of dog toenail trimmers . Cut the beak back to the point that it bleeds good . Both top and bottom .Have blood stop powder ready . Cauterizing with a soldering iron or some such also works . They could bleed out if you do not stop it . This makes the beak sore for awhile . Pecking a hard egg hurts . They quit trying .
