Surviving Minnesota!

Orange spotted not pumpkin seed . Only lake I know that has them . Never saw then until about 10 years ago .
This is what I did all weekend . Fillets in the freezer .

I took the SLW of the roost this morning and tipped her slightly forward and gently pressed on her crop and drained most of the fluid it was a light brown color. Didn't smell horrible like I expected from what I read about it. A natural treatment I read says yogurt or kefir with oregano oil and cinnamon, or olive oil and oregano oil. So I'll give her something like that later today. Another remedy I read said to give her a syringe full of red wine. I don't know about that but maybe I'll go buy some. Anyone else have ideas? Also says be careful that she doesn't aspirate the liquid into her lungs, how do you know if that happens (other than death)? if a little gets in the lungs will she gurgle and is a little ok? dumb questions? IDK....

Quote: Naw, lol, just check it in the morning. sometimes when you push on the crop, or squeeze it a little water will come out their beak as well. Some people say to tip them so their head is down at a slant and water will come out, if you do this, be careful as they can aspirate and get the water in their lungs and die in a few days. I don't turn them upside down. you can feel it if it is water balloony.

I like balloony. It is a great substitute for baloney. Hmmmmm - adding it to my chicken list of what initial means what. LOL

Several natural home remedies online to try, that is for sure. I'd start going through them till you find one that works for her. I'm not sure how to tell if they aspirate or not, so I never chanced it myself. I think they get sick like a pneumonia or something if they do, or something like that. so I never did that. Good luck! It is definitely curable.

To keep from getting it in my flock again I check their crops every night and morning. If I feel an impaction (hard at night, hard in the morning or not completely gone) then I massage it for a few seconds to get things moving through again, that way it doesn't sit in there and get sour. I can check them everyday as I only have 5. this would be hard with many chickens. Also, I get up at 4 so they are still on the roost when I get out there at 4:30 or so.

I feel like such a loser, you all have these great coops and I am working my butt off and never seeming to get these things done!

LOL...I hear you have a lot of birds, that alone is a great accomplishment to care for them all! And my coop was not without cussing and injury!!! I was trying to finish Sunday night around 8pm after I had been working on it since about 7:30am...well needless to say, after plowing the top of my skull into one of the lower rafters...the run door and roosts waited until Monday! I still can't touch the top of my head!!
Nice coop! Love it!

Since you asked about breaking egg eaters I will share . Beware this may seem harsh but less harsh than the ax . Take a pair of dog toenail trimmers . Cut the beak back to the point that it bleeds good . Both top and bottom .Have blood stop powder ready . Cauterizing with a soldering iron or some such also works . They could bleed out if you do not stop it . This makes the beak sore for awhile . Pecking a hard egg hurts . They quit trying .

I am not sure I can carry this out. But first I need to figure out which one she is. Maybe when I do figure out which one of the look "alikes" she is... Maybe I will just bring her to meet you along with a dog toenail clipper. I am not even sure she is the one that pecked it open. However, circumstantial evidence points to her, beings I saw her peck nostril deep into the egg yolk.
