Surviving Minnesota!

I hope the birds work out for you.

Do not be overly disappointed in the GFF lines.  I have found GFF birds to be over rated in my limited experience.  I think they do a better job of Marketing than they do breeding.   I tend to agree with Minnie on GFF.

I am finding breeding my hatcher stock in some cases gives me as good of birds as breeding the Creamettes does number wise.  It just takes a lot of birds to get winners (IMHO).   I have that pen of about 60 roosters in it there is maybe 3-4 birds that would make good show birds. Many would make good breeding birds though as the defects are minor, and a hen can correct them with her genes.

How do you trap the coyotes?

I have trapped fox but always in the winter when they are real hungry.  How do you cover the traps and what do you use to mask your scent?  I wish I could just introduce Ebola for Coyotes into the area..........If it affected weasels, coon and eagle it would not bother me either...

You have to boil the traps first. They shouldn't have any rust.
Bury them part way and I put coyote pee and bones on top..
There's a lot in it, easier to explain in person.

Here's some pictures of some of the breeders hens and roosters of the isbars. I was reluctant when he said that they were from Greenfire. But these look pretty good

That is similar to how I use to trap fox, but when I did it was in fields along wood lines where there was manure and odors to cover the human smell, here I do not have that anymore.

I may just have to mow the pasture and woods to a nice suburban level to make crossing it a little scarier for the yote. It will also give me a clearer longer shot at it.

I can see now I need a new mower!

I shut off the AC here at work...but now I just turned it back on. It got muggy in here real fast.

Ivie: My Mother had a STainless percolater for many years. I think she just got her Mr. Coffee like in the last 5 years. I think My BIL brought it up north for her....as he likes coffee more than Mom and Dad do. Mom and Dad don't really drink coffee. As a result I really don't either. But I do like a taste of it once in a while and the refined ways of making it really intrigue me. I think they are like $12 for some of the cheaper ones. As high as $79 for the top of the line one.

John and Mary's name ring a bell with me a bit. I might have known them....?

Both were in their nineties when they passed. Mary Hancock had visited that cabin all the years of her life. Her grandfather had built the original one which now belongs to a friend of theirs. Then she married John during WWII and became Sanford. They lived next to me while I lived in Richfield with my first husband. Love those two. OMG - cannot express how much I loved them and miss them.

In my limited 2nd party GFF experience... x3 on the opinion of that operation. I will take a bird from a small time breeding operation 10 x over a GFF bird at this point in time. Quality vs. Quantity might be the issue they are running into.

They have a beautiful website.
But they lost me at ridiculous shipping costs. And humanely, shipping birds in hot boxes from North Carolina does not strike my fancy.

I tried to find pictures of them --obituaries or whatever...I could not find any. Just to see if I ever saw them there...which I think I did. I actually have a picture of who Mary is in my mind, maybe John.

IDK...I might have them all wrong, as to who they are.

WOW! I can't thank the Veteran Chickeners enough! I have learned a ton since March....and I am still learning. Thank you for all the expertice....and companionship.

P.S. 9 year old son used the carry the rooster around the yard for 20 minutes to show dominance.....guess who leaves who alone now. "Mom, PITA does't fly up at me anymore....that still doesn't remove him from stew pot road though."

So, what do you picture?

Were they both sort of Petite (short)? Graying but you could tell they still worked around the house and outside...still very active. She would smile and had that approachable but sturdy Grandma feel about her. Maybe they were dancers when they went out to Patricks? Oh I'm sure I knew them...Cute, Cute Couple. What church did they go to?

I KNOW!!! Its incredible! we do alot of chatter on here - and I often do not have alot to offer in the way of intelligence about chickens ( which is okay because I am absorbing and will pay it forward) - there is just an incredible about of information shared with the chatter. Thank you to the the knowledgeable, experiences chickeners for sharing their information. That is very generous.
