Ralphie never show the ones you want to keep . Once you get talking you accidentally tell what you like about that one . Then they want it . I learned that selling years ago . Now I meet people somewhere . Biosecurity is the reason I give . Which is part of the reason . The other reason is it is a different world than the one I grew up in . People may come back and steal or turn you in for something they perceive as wrong . Never happened to me but I know people who had it happen .

Jerryse makes a good point....but call me naive .... there are still a few good people in this world. As a new chickener I really appreciate all the advice whether in person or via online forums. So it all boils down to know who you are doing business with. Sad that a few bad apples have to ruin it for everyone.

I hate when people come out ot look at chickens, they always want one that's not for sale.

Most recently we were having a kid stay with us for Ukie camp, and her parents came to visit.
They have chickens so the mom was watching mine and I walked up behind her and she very demandingly told me that she wanted RJ, my orange rooster. I politely said no he's not for sale and never will be. She got really defensive and then insisted on saying that she wanted him and she would complain to my parents. I again told her no, and said that my parents wouldn't make me sell him. That shut her up though.
But I mean seriously you're a full grown adult!

I Love Layers, there are many adults who are full grown by size and age but mentally are somewhere in there terrible teens. Not to offend teenagers.
From time to time my wife accuses me of childish behavior, but she is not a very good judge of character as evidenced by who she is married to?!

I forgot to mention and Minnie's post reminded me. The woman that got the creamettes today really liked the white sports. She wanted to know when she could get one of them....

I really like the sports, I would never have guessed a pure white bird could look so good!

Can you post pictures of your white sports? I'm not familiar with the breed and am curious what they look like.

I use to let people come to my house to buy eggs, but now I meet them down the road somewhere. My return customers being an exception, of course. Unfortunately, you just don't know anymore. It's refreshing to know those on here that I've met so far aren't serial killers =) Well, that I know of.....DA DUM.

Oh man, you won't believe this story. I have a young Easter Egger rooster I've been trying to rehome. A young guy came to my house and picked him up last week. No big deal. However, he showed back up to my house later that night completely unannounced saying he couldn't keep him. I was peeved. Not only was the Rooster completely drenched in his cage from what I'm assuming was water, the kid just showed up. It showed me how easily these people can just go right back to your house whenever they want. I was a b*&$h and didn't offer him his money back and I think he knew I was irritated enough not to ask.

Just kidding. He must be a good looking fellow. Just wanna see what all the fuss was about.

Ed you crack me up. DH is also childish. I always tell people I have 3 kids....

I would never think of that. I just like talking about chickens too much to think of an ulterior motive.


I always have tried to get them looking and liking a certain bird hoping they will buy it. I have booties and gloves for people to wear if they are not the kind that can be disinfected. I suppose I should re-think this.

I don't take birds back for real biosecurity reasons. I would cull one before I took it back. But then I talk to almost everyone the dogs like, they are better judges of people than I am.

A white sport is not a breed it is a bird with 2 white recessive genes, making a white chicken of almost any breed as I understand. Mine happen to be cream legbars. They are a monster as far as the breed purist go, but I love them.

I will only take a very, very select few people out to see birds and ONLY if I know they have shoes or boots that have no trace of other chickens.

Jerry is spot on with his call on how to handle visitors.

I have had my share of people who insist or bug me at least, to sell them my best birds. Uh, no. What the heck will I breed with if I sell my best? I had a fellow Buckeye breeder pull that crap with me too. I no longer waste my time dealing with him or people like him, they just drain the goodness out of a person.

I did recently have a customer just show up, and that really irritated me. It is rude to not call and see if it is okay. It is enough to have family do that, but when complete strangers show up and want something, that is even worse. Then again, some family I don't mind just popping in.
