Surviving Minnesota!

We had a fox run out of the yard tonight. Saw it cross the drive as I drove out to get my kids from work. Crap.

When I got back I got the pop door off of shavings and further down it's slot. Closed up other doors to the run. I even shut one of the windows. Just leaving one window open. Screen and hardware cloth on that window.

This evening was mojito and chicken tv evening.

The yellow lab took a run at the silkie tonight. I screamed and she backed right off. She has been so good and now this. Poor Dixie. I don't know if she'll do that again... But she knows I was not pleased.

Labs while luvable can always come up with new ways to disappoint of plish one off........ Mine are still wearing muzzles outside, this could be for the rest of their lives...

The turkeys have been going into the chicken coop at night. Since the predator problem I have started making them go into it. AT first they did not like it, now they line up outside waiting to go in. They know they get corn and Boss when they get inside.

Ethel did not take her baby guineas to her pen last night. She lined them up outside the coop and walked them in for treats. Judy was all worried they would get cold and die over night. I assured her they were old enough to be outside. They were all lined up on a roost alongside Ethel at bedtime.

If you are worried about a skunk.  Put a long rope on the trap before you set it.  stretch the rope out its full length.  Make you have the rope attached to the front of the trap. On a skunk the rear is the dangerous spot. Hopefully the trap will be too  small for the skunk to turn around.

If you get one hook it onto a truck/car/ATV and  drive as fast as you can as far away from the buildings as possible.  Release the rope. skedaddle out of there as fast as possible.  Shoot the skunk from a distance with a 22.

Figure that trap is unusable for a year and leave it lie...

This is a lesson I learned when about 12.    DO NOT TRY TO SHOOT THE SKUNK IN THE TRAP CLOSE TO BUILDINGS.... BTW did you know the "odor" causing liquid is yellowish green and can spray about 20 feet out the rear of the skunk even while in a trap?

Yes I know they can spray really far

From personal experience or a book? Their is no knowledge as good as that you learn first hand.

As a little experiment I think you should approach a skunk from the rear and aggravate it enough to spray, Then measure the distance. I think you should do this 2-3 times and then record the distance each time and see how much distance is lost on each successive spray. Express this as a whole number and a percentage too.

We might be able to get you a government grant for this.

I should have read this before typing,,,

but I would NOT recommend the release then shoot plan.  Traps are not that expensive in the whole scheme of things.

Exactly. Some people think the dragging method is to harmful though

This has struck me as so funny! It reminds me of all the people wanting to vote this year, They hate Trump so they will not vote for him..or they hate Clinton so they will not vote for her.......

it is a binary choice, there is no third option.

The same is for your skunk, there is not third choice. You have to decide which you want. to smell, puke and be reminded of the skunk for 2 months, or drag his silly butt out of the yard and let him have a little misery. Think of it as a saucer behind a snowmobile ride for the skunk, without the snowmobile or the saucer.

Ralphie has a point though.
Most of the time they aren't spraying that much when you start dragging. That's why you get your butt in gear so that when it does start spraying you're out of the yard
