Surviving Minnesota!

I was going to try and buy her off of you! I lost my two females and my bachelor drake Frank) has been a mess since then. He waits for us at the door and won't go too far from us when we're outside. I had a hard time finding any adult female khaki's for sale. However, I made a random stop at the Anoka Ramsey feed store and she had 4 or 5 females around 3 months old. It was pretty sad how excited I got over them! Long story short, Frank has some girlfriends now and is acting more like a duck again. I do kind of miss watching him run towards me when I come home everyday.....

Congrats! One of my favorite parts of chicken keeping =)

My son wants to get into Black Copper Marans. I think we'll set up a project pen for him and start looking at breeder options. We have 5 BCM's right now, but they're layer quality. I love them. I was pretty religious with the bag balm last year and didn't have any frostbite issues with their combs. But obviously a breed with a rose comb would be more ideal for our winters. We'll see.

I think Sumatra roosters are absolutely beautiful!

White and pied Guineas! Awesome! Like I always tell you, I can't decide if I think they're cute or ugly. Maybe both. I don't know.

And congrats again on your birds!

Ralphie, if you strategically park outside the back entrance you really only have to walk through the doors and Sweet Martha's is right there. Grab a bucket and walk back out. Piece of cake.

I'll be heading up to Grand Rapids this weekend for a week or so. My family has a cabin up that way. Do you got to L & M for feed? That place gets me in trouble. Not only do you walk out of there with tractors and chainsaws, you also have a new jacket, gun, house decor, baby chicks, dog toys, and 20 boxes of cereal. Can't forget this fishing gear, kayak, and flowers. Lol

I break out in hives whenever I get inside the 494/694 corridor. The fair grounds is way inside!

You need to seek professional help with your duck addiction....says the man that counted 85 birds leaving his one coop this morning..

Have you seen Runnings? Montecello is getting a fleetfarm too! I suppose you do the Cambridge store a lot.... Runnings is not L&M for clothes but close second, way better than Fleetfarm clothes.

Judy wants to go to the fair now, today, when she found out the SS where there. I tried to explain they are not our SS, but she keeps dwelling on " but they were"......

But their webbed feet are so cute....

I have never been to Runnings. Sounds dangerous like FF and L&M. Fleet Farm could definitely do better with their clothing. I don't mind their hunting gear, but I did buy most of mine from L&M last year. More variety.

If you go to the fair, go during the second week on a Wednesday and go early. You'll have your run of the place. You could look for a Park and Ride on the way, too. That would help with your 494/694 concerns. See, I have it all figured out for you =)

Siggie, I am quite sure that was an upsetting experience for you and the grandkids.
That does kind of sound like normal behavior for someone that has been up in the boondocks near Finland for too long? Could you tell from his speech if he was a Finlander?
LOL....no I did hear him say he was from Minneapolis and according to him he has a cabin not too far from my house (NEGATIVE!) I believe he and a bunch of guys broke in to one of the cabins and partied all night.... we know everyone here up and down Hwy 1 and I don't think he has a cabin here.

From my personal experience, mental illness can look a lot like someone on drugs. This hit close to home this year with my son. That isn't a city problem, it is a people problem. The paranoia would make me think he is struggling with something. I am not saying to not be cautious, but I see the world in a different light after the last few months of what my family has been through.
Just sayin'...

Could be but based on what he was saying, he was partying at a cabin close by, got caught with a girl (probably one who he wasn't supposed to be with) got beat up and shot with poison darts..... I did the math...... but you might be right...after being a cop for so many years...maybe I am a little jaded.

My grandpa is having is heart surgery today. Headed to Bismarck for it.

A 10 year old boy from my old school, of 30 people, was killed yesterday in a Razor accident. He was pinned underneath it, a kid who is 18 was riding behind him, that kid tried to lift the razor off but couldn't called 911. The little boys dad was a bit behind them when he got there him and the older boy were able to get him out, then air lifted him to Bismarck and was pronounced dead on site.
Just really wakes you up to reality..
I wish your grandpa well!! So sad about the little boy. But I need to ask a dumb question...what is a razor? is it like an ATV?

Haha I'm not letting go of her, I'm trying to get more hens! That's great you found some though!

Hello again. I missed something here. WHERE is this fair? Wright, Ramsey and Sherburne are done. I am going to the State fair on that Thursday, August 25th (Remember, Don Henley in concert). So what fair are ya all going to?

So DH has a black lab. It was a family rescue dog. We have had her almost two years now and she is almost three. DH has never had his own dog to hunt with. DH has not spent alot of time training and would not know how to begin to train a dog. We also have two ankle biters that are mine. Ralphie knows - they bark! Ugh! Anyway, the black lab has developed possesive disorder or whatever. If she has a bone or chewy she will not give it up. I am super firm (not abusive) with her to let her know that I feed her and I say what she can and can't have. Which are no bones and no chewies. It cost us $300. plus when she tore up one of the ankle biters because he was trying to walk by her. Opps. Thats it - no more goodies for you -EVER!

While, this last weekend in Aitkin, when there were five labs visiting, my DS threw some turkey water on the grass. Our lab was doing whatever and the DH called her off til he could see what she was doing. When he figured it out he released her (verbally) and then a couple other dogs joined in to smell and taste what was so interesting. Well, you can about tell me the end of the story. There was a fight because our lab said MINE! My DS took our lab (no complaints about this) to the ground and put her in a submissive mode. The dogs were okay but my DS was P _ _ _ _ _ D. She is not allowed up there again (our 5th wheel sits on their property until we start to build on our parcel of property) until she has gone through professional training with my husband to get rid of this bad, bad behavior. I am totally on-board with all of this. I thought that kind of training should have started in May.

Please note here that I have kept my mouth shut and my thoughts to myself about this subject with my DH. Only a few gentle reminders that all is not right with Abbey and that I have never had a dog behave like this and I have had many dogs in my many years.

Okay, now I know this is a chicken thread, but do you have any input about this dog story?

My DH has called two trainers and has a third one to talk to. The two trainers that he has talked to have told him if you have chickens and they have free-ranged and the dog has not killed any - she will n-e-v-e-r hunt. Well, she wanted to get those chickens but I reprimanded her and told her off limits. Now the chickens do not free-range anymore so no issues in any case. Incidentally, she is a british lab. I guess they are more stubborn and quitters if they do not feel like doing it anymore - they just won't.

I took her into our home because the b-i-l had some medical problems and I was attracted to this dog from the moment I saw her. We are her third home. The first one, a woman bought her for her kids for x-mas and they just did not want a dog. Then she went to the b-i-l in feb so you gotta figure she was about four months old. We got her just before november. We recovered her from the humane society. Beautiful dog. However, during her puppy stage she did puppy things i.e., jump up and grab butter off the counter top (dah! who left that butter out??????) and drink from the toilet (totally gross but did you ever think of closing the toilet lid???) and if she had an accident in the house she was pretty much knocked around and thrown into her kennel. Hence, our 15 year old niece told her mom (they are divorced and were watching the dog while the b-i-l was in the hospital) to take the dog to the humane society while b-i-l was recovering from an accident in the hospital. He could not afford the bill to get her out.

Any thoughts, ideas, useful feed-back? We are talking about re-homing her but cannot do that with the problem she has. If she was an only dog it would work out great. But that would be her fourth home. And she is a good dog. She has learned our property boundaries and responds to the commands I have taught her i.e., sit (hand command) stop, lay, etc.

Ohhhhhh no. . . . My heart breaks and I cry just to think of this! A perfectly fun time gone awray. What started out so good ended so bad. I pray for comfort for his family and hope the community takes note of possibilities and keeps safety in place. That eighteen year old! He must be simply out of his mind with grief along with family and friends.
