Good Morning finally. I Love Layers - glad to hear that grpa is doing well. It is amazing what is realized after that kind of surgery. How much better a person can move around and go up stairs etc. I have not personally experienced this - just been told by older family members. Here's to a fast recovery.

BT - thanks for the stories about the dogs. Much appreciated and encouraging. And I do all that - sit while I do whatever I want, I go out and come in before dogs, etc. I like the dog whisperer too.

I am confident all will turn out well whatever the results are. It just is. She is a good dog. Oh! she caught a rabbit (and killed it) last night. Then she sat and waited until I noticed. I got the DH outside since he is the main man and told him to praise her, make sure she lets you have the rabbit (she did) gave her other treats and tons of praise and then I did not know what to do. LOL. Stood there a little stunned for a second because, what do we do with the rabbit. I took her in the house and he dispensed of that carcass. I thought all that was good. But then I am looking for the positive. The trainer has a bird with clipped wings to release tomorrow to see what Abbey does.

Ralphie - LOL! It is remarkable to me that someone would pay that much for an animal. It is only remarkable if hunting is a hobby. IF a person is a professional, writes the articles, takes out other people as a guide or say a professional fisherperson (needs a GOOD boat) or golf player, earns money doing their thing - then get the best. For my DH - hunting is definitely a hobby! He just started hunting again three years ago. There are enough dogs during a hunt that he would be covered no matter what. IF you have the time then train a dog and use it to hunt. When you are too busy to even walk the animal - forget it. I am kind of a no frills, no fooling around kind of person. Honest.

Oh! and I won't have any more little dogs. I love my dogs. I am just done with the little yippy things. And you are absouletly right BT, about them being bossy and territorial (not that you said all that) and kind of PITAs. I guess I am just getting old enough that I don't want to do 'little' training all over again. They are my buddies though.

So much to do, so little time.

It's up to you Ivie. Of course. But if you want dogs a certain way it does take time, but mostly consistency with things.

They have their little patterns in life that they count on with us to get along with us. Some of those patterns go haywire if we're in a hurry doing shortcuts. You know what I'm saying? I would say...Whatever Abbey is having to do the Ankle biters need to do it too. YOU are the leader in the house not the Anklebiters, not Abbey.

'nuff said.

Preparations for a long weekend today. I tried last night. But the heat/humidity and swarms of mosquitos were horrid last night. ugh...It's a marathon today...

toodles.

The dog I go hunting with cost about $1800. She was definitely worth it though. The guy who owns her says she's never lost a point, which I believe, the one day she tracked a 2 roosters 7 miles. The best thing about het is that she realizes that ducks and chickens aren't pheasants so I don't have to worry about her running around the yard after we get done hunting. But this guy takes her out every day during season. And at least 2 times a week to just exercise her, and he lets her point birds and he takes amazing pictures!! A lot of them are featured in Pheasants Forever

I like Grand Rapids shopping in the Summer. Less busy than Brainerd. I live in the middle of both. Both about an hour away. I do go to L & M for feed. But I found the chicken aisle a little lacking on their usual array last night. Their prices are a bit higher too...I saw. I like the Purina brand and they carry that along with Nutrena, and Locally Laid brand if I want to get Non-GMO mash. If I end up going to BRainerd then Fleet Farm is the option there. They have Nutrena or their Sprout Brand. I'm neither here nor there with my brands I guess.

Have fun on your trip to GR (as we call it around here).

L & M does carry nice brands of clothing. yes.

I've noticed that about L&M as well in regards to their feed prices. A wee bit more spendy. My usual run is to FF, so I get the Sprout brand myself. They only have one pellet feed option though, which my birds seem to waste less of. I like to mix it with the higher protein game bird feed around this time of year and winter months, but that only comes in crumbles. I may have to see what other option I have for feed in the area.

Ivie.. When I got the dog trained my son was living in South Dakota, I foolishly thought him and I would get to do a lot of pheasant hunting together. Little did I know he would rather hunt with others than his Dad. We hunted some but not a lot. I did hunt with them for several years but the last 3-4 years my hips and knees have gotten too bad to walk the uneven ground the birds live in.

IloveLayers I do not have pointers I have flushers, I love when they flush, I also like it when they grab a low flying bird out of the air. It has happened a couple times. I just have to warn people to not shoot if the dog is under the bird.

What other parts? I am confused.....

MnNice, With the mash I get a powder the birds refuse to eat. I just dump the powder/dust into a bucket add water and let it dry then they eat it.

I just got home from Runnings. As soon as I step out of the car all the birds that were free ranging eating seeds and scratching for stuff in the tall weeds came running towards me. I have decided they are lazy and would rather beg for food than work for it. But, I did dump them some stuff, and gave them some fairly spoiled lettuce we found hiding in the corner of the fridge last night. They seemed happy.
