Surviving Minnesota!

Thank you Ralphie. They are doing great. Proud of this batch of birds this year. That little Black Cheeked EE, June Carter, has my heart. She's so friendly. Her cheeks are humungous.

Minnie Pearl the little Lavender is pretty feisty. She's the smallest but holds her own in the pecking order. Sort of cracks me up.

Oh NO Sis is in the freezer too?

I thought Sis was still upright. Now I feel bad.

Don't she was a PITA and quit laying, I had named her Pepita (pumpkin seed) . The father of both Amy and Pepita was Pipsqueek and he was an attack rooster. So they were just like daddy. Well not that bad they just attacked the other hens and little chicks not people.

So it was just yesterday I upped the protein, added Omega 3 and Oyster Shell. Also started changing out their water daily and adding electrolytes. Today I got a green egg! Yea! Regina laid her first egg! Go Regina - Go Regina.

Then I just read an article that says that feather eating indicates the need for more protein. I thought some feather eating was normal. Not. So I bet that stops also.

Pretty happy here. Catching Chipmunks and have skinned a couple today Ralphie. They are in the process of drying but these saddles cost $5,000. Are you sure you want them or a freebie?

Really? you skin chipmunks? what do you do with the little things?

So a couple hens are starting to molt, I bought some Feather Fixer because I've heard/read people using it. I used to give mealworms during molt but those went bad this year and are gone. My birds eat mash and the feather fixer is pellets so they aren't eating it. I'm thinking of grinding it up and mixing it with something else, that should work but it says on the bag not for under 16 week olds. How to keep the 8 week old chicks from eating it, or is it really not a big deal?

You tell them not to eat it! It is as simple as that. If they try to eat it you give them a time out or a paddle on their butts. It will work, trust me on this.

Or I have no idea how to keep little ones out of big ones feed. I just looked up the stats on feather fixer and I see it is 18% protein. Protein being the key I think during molt, why not use a game bird feed. I am feeding everything a 22% game bird finisher right now because of the molt and it does not hurt the young birds. Oh, I feed a mash too. My birds look at pellets or crumble like my kids use to look at spinach or liver, there is no way they will eat it.
