Surviving Minnesota!

Sounds like you all enjoyed the weekend as much as we did! After the beautiful morning at the farmers market (sold out of eggs and garlic) we decided to take an impromptu camping trip to Nerstrand state park. Holy cow was it a nice weekend to be out!!! There aren't many days left like that in this fall.

Came home yesterday afternoon and got a start on garage siding. That stuff isn't so bad to work with.

Ooo and I talked DW into letting me buy a trailer. Found an 18 foot flat bed a few towns over I'm going to look at tomorrow. Little does she know that a pass to buy a trailer is a pass to use it for hauling things too

That is just implied! Why have a trailer if you can't haul stuff on it?

Thanks Klop  About the nursing home info. Maybe the eggs are already scrambled and in a bag. They buy those for the breakfasts the Knights make at church.  Did  you get rid of all your eggs at the farmers market today?

Ralphie, how far did you need to travel to watch your granddaughter play football?  Have you seen that new granddaughter lately?

I did get a brooder made today and put it on my work bench in the garage and of course, it has a heat lamp over it. LOL. Its not square but it will work just fine. I scavenged all recycle wood from around the resources stored on these premises. Feeling pretty good about it as it is the first thing I have actually made all on my own. Pertaining to wood and sawing and nailing and screwing.

Next I will make a run to add onto it and it will be a tractor for the chickens. It is light enough that I can easily move it.  I may make another sometime just because of the challenge of squaring it.

I have Chicken of the Woods growing on my property. I will post pictures, hopefully tomorrow. Of course I see all these mushrooms now. Ralphie, if you want to stop by I will show you where it is and you can decide if you want it. You may not get that offer next year. I am not ready to get into mushrooms.
But hey! You mushroomers have a great time tomorrow!

The nursing home eggs actually come in shell. They must go through the sanitizing dip as was described by someone else.

Haven't we been down this road before with the garlic ;)  I have almost 11 pounds of garlic seed in the garage and getting ready to plant it, possibly tomorrow.  DH was clearing out the garden where we will be putting it in.  We had to get a restart after the two months we lost in Spring over our son kind of ended our chances of getting any gardening done.  I know I have Georgia Fire, German Extra Hardy and Music, but I forget the others I bought this time.  We will have plenty next year if all goes well.

Oh right. I remember you talking about it. I sorted all my garlic by size. Everything 3.5 oz per head and under I'm eating and selling. Everything 4.5 and over I'm planting back and 3.5 to 4.5 is my buffer depending how much I need more to plant or eat.

I probably have 8-9 lbs of 4.5oz+ heads to plant

I have eggs hatching! I maybe never stated that we ha set eggs. I know it is late in the fall but we have a place for them while it is cold. Anyway, I set 15 eggs 4 were infertile and one a quitter. But 10 are on lock down and all had movement on day 18. One externally pipped today. Wasn't expecting anything until tomorrow. Can hear him peeping and see his beak. I just heard some knocking too. So bring on the hatch!

They will be barnyard mixes as we just wanted to be sure we knew how to run the incubator successfully before Spring. Daddies were Bovan and hens mixes as well. Should be fun to see them feather. I sort of like the surprise of not know how they will look!

I am struggling with doing a fall batch of chicks too. We have talked about adding a couple leghorns for white eggs. We have some demand for white eggs in our market but I would really only need 6 or so. I don't know what else I would fill an order with. Maybe if I drove to the hatchery I could get less than the 25 minimum?

I am worried about hatching this late... I have some chicks now that were hatched in August and I worry about them too! I'm scared of birds freezing to death but they should be just fine!

Well I should finish getting filling out papers and my homework.
