Surviving Minnesota!

Still just one with a hole in it. Lots of talking from that little one though. Rocking from a couple others. On to other chores. Just had to check in on them though!

I also have concluded I need more nesting boxes. I watched the morning rush to lay and many times have 2-4 birds trying to lay in the same box. Hmmm. Now to figure out what to do for that.

Ralphie, how many breeds do you have? How many total chickens? Sounds like you have a collection to me! My Dom hen are very tame. I think we will have to see about a nice Dom rooster from you next summer. We will see what ours look like. I also could maybe use one of your Cuckoo Maran roosters from that straight run you got. We will see how it all pans out this Spring and what you have to choose from.

Good Morning All,
We are hearby done with high moisture corn.....yes the silo is filled, leveled and unloader is in place only to find out that my father-in-law made his first mistake ever! He bought the wrong chute plastic. Over the weekend we also finished combining about half of the beans. We will be storing the beans for a while as the prices have tanked. Only got the combine stuck once and my sister-in-law got a wagon of corn stuck in the field. I would like to thank my lucky stars that my father-in-law assigned me roller mill duty this year....his exact words, "I can easily yell at my kids for driving in the wet parts of the field...they have farmed these fields for 15 years longer than you, I could never yell at a daughter in law." So I proceeded to plug the roller mill on the first load on Saturday morning.....his response, "You are my son's problem, he can unplug it for you." Later I found out that the infamous father in law never reset it from last year when we were processing dry corn.

All is well on the chicken front....my kids are considering bringing some of their pet hens to blessing of the animals for religion on Wednesday night. I am trying to talk them out of it because every farm cat we have ever had blessed mysteriously died within a week of the blessing. Maybe I should take that miserable cockerel off Ralphie's hands?

I hope everyone is doing well and enjoyed the sunshine this weekend. I will have to catch up hopefully tonight.

Beans are flying out of the fields down here. We are due for a little rain later this week so they are trying to take advantage of the dry ground while they can. Not quite 'around the clock combining' but they aren't taking their time.

Up here they started beans 2 weeks ago! People have started corn too but it's for silage I'm thinking. Corn is still to wet to take down yet.

I have eggs hatching! I maybe never stated that we ha set eggs. I know it is late in the fall but we have a place for them while it is cold. Anyway, I set 15 eggs 4 were infertile and one a quitter. But 10 are on lock down and all had movement on day 18. One externally pipped today. Wasn't expecting anything until tomorrow. Can hear him peeping and see his beak. I just heard some knocking too. So bring on the hatch!

They will be barnyard mixes as we just wanted to be sure we knew how to run the incubator successfully before Spring. Daddies were Bovan and hens mixes as well. Should be fun to see them feather. I sort of like the surprise of not know how they will look!
Isn't it just soooooo exciting to have your first hatch?!!!

I can't wait to see babies MO3PT! Lol you have to share pics when they hatch!
Ditto, fuzzy butts are rare this time of year...give us a fuzzy fix.

It doesn't matter how many nest boxes you have, inevitably you will have more than one hen trying to lay in the same box. I think I read somewhere, the recommendation is 1 nest box for every 4 to 5 hens.

Gosh it has been quiet today! I guess we gotta get all our stuff done before the cold hits!
