Here is that crazy barnyard mix i was talking about. God forbid if he would stand still! he wanted nothing to do with me sneaking up on him and when he runs his head reaaaally bobs which was funny. it also didnt help that me trying to sneak up on him made my pooch think i was inviting her for a game of chicken herding which made it that much harder lol...
anyways.... here he is. i am thinking he must be a Buckeye over a barred rock since he has a pea/rose comb. Conrad (my rainbow rooster) has a huge single comb and i dont think he is hiding a recessive rose comb (you genetics guys can chime in here, i forget what over rides what). The only other hens i have with a pea/rose is one of my silver laced hens. this guy is definitly barred.
so thoughts/

I read it too, neat Story lvie! I want a pet chicken who wants to go everywhere with me, oh, I do have that dog that does that though... lolAlmost done.
Klop Klop - ouch! sorry about that throbbing thumb. It happens
Minnie - yikes! I am into falling if I am not extra precautious -who would think that stupid muck and a threshold would cause so much trouble. And I realize I do not recover as quickly as if I was still young and agile. It hurts. So I move slower trying to analyze the area before I take a plunge. I still process up and down the myrid of stairs I negotiate each and every day - but I place my foot securely instead of assuming I can dance up and down them any longer. I love that I am old enough to have to grow through this period of adjustment.![]()
LAST Story
So I am at the campfire next door on Saturday night and am telling them about the two chicks that come running to me and want to crawl all over me instead of eat or drink like the rest of the flock is doing.
The neighbor proceeds to tell me of an older gentleman that he knew growing up. You would see him drive through town and on the back of his seat is a chicken perched. One day the story came out from this older man that he had this chicken (a well-established truth) and he really did not want to take it in the car with him however he had no choice. From the beginning this chick was different than any other chick he had ever had. It would not leave him be! When he would leave that chick would run after the car and when he would come back he would find the chick two miles down the road still looking for the car. So he began letting it ride along. When he went to bed that chick would make such a fuss and noise that it finally got to sleep on the bedpost at the foot of the bed. Whenever he sat down the chick would fuss so finally it began to come into the house and sit on his shoulder.
My neighbor swears this story is true and that he knew the man as an acquaintance while growing up.![]()
The END. I gotta go get something else done with my day.
Hope you heal quickly from your unfortunate fall!@duluthralphie I find most birds like warm water if they are just sitting in it, at least once you get them submerged anway. The CRX don't like it, but there is no washing those until they hit the scalder tomorrow morning. I am glad I could wait another week to take these ones in, they will make more of a meal than those ones last week.
I took a spill yesterday during chores. The CRX pen is the last one I come through coming out of the coop and they were getting wet a mushy by the waterer (can't keep those things clean for beans at this point), and some of that mush stuck on the bottom of my boot. I went to step out of the door and when I stepped on the threshold, my foot went out, I lost balance, landed on my butt, but not before whacking my shoulder on the door and my hip on the casing. I came down hard enough that it rattled my cage a little. I have a couple of scrapes and bruises, but I am otherwise okay. It made me glad those filthy birds are going to be in the freezer by tomorrow night. I am just hoping the shrink bags get here before I have to pick them up. I get the back bagged, but their bags have so much air, I like putting them in shrink ones to keep better. It is extra work, but worth it.
I will be taking 3 fewer birds to Hutch. I thought I would sign up a trio of White Silkies, but after looking at how dirty they were, and the fact I was going to just sell them right after anyway, I went ahead and sold all the pullets and a cockerel to a couple from Iowa today. So, I am out of those foo-foo birds, except the few extra males to sell off now.
I am disgusted with how my Buckeye cockerels are turning out, and yesterday I found one dead without a clue what happened. My rooster that was in the breeding pen last got a really bad infection in one ear and I think I am going to just have to put him down. He can't stay very well and his head is twisting to the side that has the infection. I keep cleaning it and have treated him, but it isn't getting better, it doesn't seem. That is a gross and nasty thing to mess with.
I am selling a few Cornish at the show to a young man, and more are getting shipped to Arkansas as soon as the boxes are here. I won't mind fewer birds to feed. I will miss the Cornish, they are really a different kind of bird, but I need to do this. Who knows, maybe I will get stuck with a trio of WLRs ?
I didn't get the washing of birds done this weekend like I was planning. I better get a move on and get it done though. I have to clean pens and pick the show birds out so I can get rid of the extras around here. And there is that winter prep that needs finishing.![]()

Nothing wrong with me!Update on steer doing splits. So I met the nice guy from elm dale locker who comes to the farm to start the butchering process. Father in law and I are lift the 1400 lb steer up with aid of skid loader and wide straps. Get it upright take the straps off and poof the thing takes off running like a bat out of he double hockey sticks. We try everything to settle it down to no avail. Nice guy from locker plant says, it appears today is not its day of recogning. 4 hours later the dumb thing is still running around like no injury. I can honestly say I have never seen that happen in my limited 36 years of animal rearing.
No pets in the house...especially dusty chickens. Cute story tho
